        Yes, I picked up that book as soon as I saw it. It is a generally
detailed and interesting account of XTC. I find myself going back and
re-reading parts every once in a while, especially when I'm listening to
an album and I want to read about the making of the album. Oh yeah... the
title. It's "Chalkhills and Children" just like the song. It has some
nice pictures and a good discography. Not as good as the one that you can
get from this mailing list, but a good one nonetheless.

        I find about half the time "This Is Pop?" has a question mark and
half the time it doesn't. The British "Compact XTC" collection uses the
question mark. That CD and the American Waxworks feature the single
version. Just in case anyone is curious, I have some other reasons to buy
one of these collections even if you have all the other CDs.
        1) "This Is Pop?" and "Wait Till Your Boat Goes Down" are
exclusive to these collections.
        2) A few of the other songs appear in exclusive edited form.
        3) The recordings on these CDs are "clean" meaning that the fade
outs do not overlap the intros of other songs like almost /every/ XTC
album does.

Yeah, the track "Beehead" is on a 12" single, a compilation album
called "Bark" and it mught be on the album "Purge" but I can't confirm
that.  All items were issued by Sweatbox Records on vinyl only and are
definitely out of print.

I have the "Bark" compilation, so contact me about getting a dub of
the track.

Yes, it was originally released as a bonus LP with _Waxworks_, a
collection of A-sides.  However, it has only been released on CD in
Japan.  Almost all of the tracks can be found on other XTC CDs,
however, so if you buy the _White Music_, _Rag & Bone Buffet_, and _Black
Sea_ CDs, you should have all the tracks on _Beeswax_.

Perhaps you saw _Radios In Motion ... A History of XTC_, which was a
promotional release to accompany the release of _Nonsuch_.  If so,
then there is nothing special about the versions of the songs
included.  The only thing worth note is its rarity as a promotional
release.  And it doesn't delve into XTC's catalog to any real depth.

Otherwise, I have no clue.

Yes, the single version of _This is Pop?_ (the question mark being
fairly common, included on the cover of the original 7" single in
fact) is available on _The Compact XTC: The Singles 1978-85_.

Subject: Explode Together Again.

Just to add to the comments upon this topic, I bought Take Away\Lure
of Salvage 3 or 4 years ago and after listening to it once gave it up
as a Mr Partridge goes mad (rather unsucessful) experiment.  But
after reading the latest discussion on Explode Together I decided to
dig it out and listen to it in new light (sorry, bit of a mixed
metaphor.)  Second time round I actually enjoyed it.  It did have
some of the XTC magic that I love.  It's not something that I'd play
to my mother as a 'Here, mum, listen to this, you'll love it' but it
has now been elevated to my prized XTC collection and not part of my
'Tommy Mackam and the Nancy Boys : We can't leave the girls alone'
collection.

It's also nice to know that other British fans exist ( e.g. Andy
Hoyler ) and that XTC are not totally unpopular in there own country.
Does anyone know how may British fans are on the mailing list?

P.s. I'd just like to say that I have a friend who lives in Swindon
an often drinks in Andy's local and another who used to go to school
with Colin's offspring (I can't remember which sex)

Subject:      XTC on XRT Live from the Archives

To follow up on Jeff's posting, the WXRT release (yes, it is only available
on CD) is quite good, from what I've heard.  I haven't gotten it yet,
but is my favorite radio station and they've been playing cuts like mad.

The XTC performance is quite good - a medly of Senses Working Overtime, Grass
 and something else that I can't recall right now.  The entire CD is a
collection of in-studio and live performances and really worth having.
There's a great song by Robyn Hitchcock that I heard yesterday - reason
enough to get it, infact. (I've got the XTC performance on tape already, you
see!)

Also, all proceeds go to Christmas is for Kids - which gives gifts to children
at hospitals and shelters and Chicago House - an AIDS service organization.
All in all, a good release.

Ummm...

My free time has gone to hell recently due to a major change in residence,
but I wanted to make sure I got in this one post to congratulate and thank
John Relph for setting up, maintaining, and taking this mail list into its
fourth century!  Way to go John!  Chalkhills is a motherlode.

One other (unrelated) thought in passing.  Fans of The Beloved Entertainer
(you know who you are!) are strongly encouraged to pick up the INCREDIBLE
"2 1/2 Years" boxed set.  If you don't have the cash, put it on your X-Mas
list and hand the list to someone who does.

Just 87 more boxes to unpack...

It is a CD, and it contains live (either in concert or in WXRT's studio)
performances by 14 different acts.  XTC is represented by the 1989 acoustic
Senses Working Overtime/Grass/Love on a Farmboy's Wages medley.  Other
songs are by Robyn Hitchcock, Los Lobos, The Replacememts, and, well, 10
others.  The disc is being sold at all "major" Chicago record stores,
including Tower (which as of last night, 11/22, still had a bunch of copies).
