Greeting all you XTC fans!!!
I'm just joining the fun. I've been a fan of XTC since Drums and Wires
first hit the record stores (1979). Around that time my band became
completely enthralled with XTC music and we did a few of their tunes in our
set. I think Dave Gregory is completely underrated as a guitarist. It's great
to know that there are others who feel the same. I invite any and all for
great conversations about the band.

I've been listening to Chips From The Chocolate Fireball for
several years now and I've always been aware of the quite whispering
by two girls just before The Pale And Precious. Recently I bought
the CD version which allowed me to repeat this section and listen to
it loudly without the danger of the next track destroying my
speakers.

It turns out that what I thought was a conversation of sorts
doesn't seem to be after all. This is what _seems_ to be said:

    d(t)ell im
    yeh - sure
    yeh
    what
    (laugh)
    posit diffran (?)
    yes.

Does anyone know who these girls are or what they are saying and
I suppose that asking _why_ they are there at all is an unanswerable
question judging from the 'Alice in Wonderland' type stuff on the
rest of the CD.

Answers to this on a postcard to: Chalkhills@presto.ig.com!

Cheers for any feedback on this one,

            Dames

Hi,

OK. I have a question about what to buy next. I've started with
Oranges and Lemons (A), then Nonsuch (B) and then Skylarking (A+).
However with the wealth of XTC stuff available I don't know what to
get next. Should I continue backwards through their catalogue ?
Advice please !

Brian

Dave Gregory was still performing with Aimee Mann as of Tuesday,
November 23. They played a sold-out show at the Fine Line Music
Cafe (i.e., yuppie bar) in Minneapolis. Dave played a Gibson Les Paul
guitar, a Fender Stratocaster mini-guitar, and a Yamaha KX 88
keyboard controller; he was the only performer who did no vocals.
He stood toward the back most of the time, and his playing was
obsessively clean (in contrast to the other musicians). The only
cover they did was Badfinger's "Baby Blue."

Hi folks, hope you're all having a nice holiday..

I want to say that I really, really like Explode Together! I think it works
best on headphones, or played loud in a quiet room, so that you can let the
large parts be large and the gradual parts be gradual and hear all the develop-
ments. I especially like it since I have a newfound love for White Music and
Go 2! I used to be so Skylarking-fixated that every time another of their
albums wasn't another Skylarking, I was disappointed. But since the summer, I
think especially the White Music CD, with the exxtra tracks, is absolutely
great!
------------
I've heard a couple tracks from Martin Newell's The Greatest Living Englishman
featuring Andy Partridge, and it sounds really good! As soon as I tape the
copy that's at KCSB, I will be all over it. What I heard reminded me of
"Lets Make a Den", and/or the pastoraller XTC songs.
----------
Anyone on Chalkhills who lives with another XTC fan probably has some fun
conversations, and I sometimes have a really fun debate with my roommate
Joe, who likes XTC a lot, but not all the same ones as I do.
Me: Bungalow is good!
Joe: Ugh! Colin is terrible, he's the most depressed, depressing songwriter
I've ever heard
Me: When you've got crosswires, everythings buzz buzz everything's beep beep
Joe: ugh
Me: The best XTC albums are Skylarking, Nonsuch, Chips from the Chocolate
Fireball...
Joe: BLACK SEA!
Me: No way, I don't like Black Sea!
Joe: ...Rag n Bone
Me: Best things on Rag n Bone are Mermaid Smiled, Another Satellite
Joe: OK..
Me: The World is Full of Angry Young Men
Joe: No!
Me: At least we both hate The Loving!
Joe: Yeah.
Me: But you know what I really like? Fly on the Wall!
Joe: aaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Subject: US Martin Newell?

Visited my friendly neighborhood Tower Records on Wednesday to see what
the deal was with the US release of "Greatest Living Englishman" and
according to their computer the release date was 11/24 (Wednesday), but
they had no copies on the shelf or in their shipping room. Their
suspicion was that it had been delayed. Anybody got more info on this,
like is it true? If so, till when?

Subject: My Dreams

I had a dream with our boys in it. I know it was a long dream but I can
only remember the last bit. I was sitting at a screening of a new
video for a new song. I was sitting at a table, Andy Partridge to my
left, Colin to his left, Dave directly behind. The video was great,
lots of motion and colour, nice sound. When it ended I turned to Dave
and said something to the effect of "Great video, Dave", and said
something to Colin and Andy as well. As they started to reply I woke up
immediately, wide awake and rested.

On a different subject, apparently today would have been Jimi Hendrix'
fifty-first birthday. We went to visit a friend who was playing all
Hendrix music and video all night. As part of the proceedings I
brought along the _If 6 Was 9_ Jimi Hendrix tribute disc with David
Dreams' cover of "Third Stone From the Sun". It was well-received by
the crowd, in fact the best cover they heard all night. I very much
enjoy Dave Gregory's playing on this. The acoustic guitars are
wonderful, and definitely have some of the Hendrix spirit. The Bevis
Frond track was also highly regarded.

My last dream? That David Dreams release his versions of other songs,
especially King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man".

Dave Gregory is playing with Aimee Mann at Slim's in San Francisco,
Monday, 29 November, 9pm, tickets are $12. I'll be there. How about
you? (And apparently Dave Gregory is the only one not singing.)
