i agree. i've been on the fence about mr. bragg's music - some is good,
some is just too political for my tastes - but "don't try this at home" is
a very good album. for those who don't know, it features johnny marr, peter

that's funny! btw, someone asked previously for recommendations of albums
by mr. belew, so here's my 2 cents worth...

"the lone rhino" - his first solo album. standouts are the title track -
wait 'til you here his rhino roar, it is unbelievable! - and "adidas in
heat", but as a whole, it's a good buy. also good is "mr. music head",
which includes the "hit", "oh daddy" that featured his daughter, audie, on
vocals.

the first place.

are you sure about this? i have my doubts about music as good as xtc's
being nominated by such a bland organization as n.a.r.a.s., and in the
alternative category? alternative to what? insipid mediocrity? well, yes,
now that i think of it, xtc _is_ an alternative to what n.a.r.a.s. thinks
is music.

how 'bout cher? do you believe?
how 'bout mariah carry?

in conclusion, i'd love to see xtc receive the recognition they deserve for

No offence, DavidOh - I'm sure Greg whatsisname was a nice guy, and 24 is
very young to die, and you seem to like him ... but to be blunt - you pays
your money, you takes your chance. Frankly, it upsets me about as much as
hearing that peace-keeping troops have been killed. So what? That's their
job.

*I* get sad when I hear about the death of people like Frank Zappa and Steve
Marriott and Tim Brooke Taylor and Graeme Chapman and Peter Sellers, who
actually contributed something useful, meaningful and lasting to our society
- i.e. their art.

*I* am moved by the lack of recognition for the quiet, dedicated mass of
people in charity and research and health care and education and other such
endeavours, who tirelessly, thanklessly work for the betterment and benefit
of others, without ever getting a gold cup or a blue ribbon or having
champagne sprayed on them by pneumatic, bikini-clad "hostesses".

Chez moi, motor racing ranks right up there with fishing and golf and every
other form of sport: i.e. the epitome of pointless, meaningless human
activity which (due to its inexplicable attractiveness) has been co-opted
into a means of syphoning rivers of cash out of suckers across the globe.

Motor racing - a bunch of egomaniacal young hoons, squandering obscene
amounts of money, driving mobile billboards at high speed. Big deal. Wake me
when it's over.

As for whether motor racing is a sport? Well, given that I inhabit a world
which (in the interests of better marketing) now defines chess as a sport
... hell, what else would you call it? Sport is a good a name as any. Me, I
call it bollocks.

XTC content - nil. So sue me.

Hello

I thought I should inform those Hillers present in the UK that, according
to next week's Radiotimes (the Greek god of telly listing), XTC will be
appearing on Top of the Pops 2 on Wednesday 10th November at 6pm on
BBC2. Personally, I hope they're showing the lads performing Sgt. Rock; as
I recall that the drumming style of Terry Chambers was mightily impressive
for that track. Knowing our luck, however, this appearance will be
replaced with one from Classix Nouveau or Modern Romance.

For those of you outside these shores, Top of the Pops is a weekly
television pop music chart show which is better watched with the sound off
and subtitles on. Top of the Pops 2 is a dip into the TotP archives showing
acts from as far back as the early 1960's (hence the once-a-series showing
of Status Quo's 'Pictures of Matchstick Men') up to the present day. These
are accompanied by sarcastic comments by "has-been voice over man".

No takers for the yorkshire pudding question, then?

Chalkhills has definitely invaded my unconsious! I dreamt again of things
XTC. Cant remember it clearly...

Andy had come to a dinner party my brother gave. At some point, he shows me
a painting called "An Explication of Pink Things". Represented on the canvas
are 6 to 9 women perched above the ground, on crosses. Their pubic areas
have been shaved.

The crosses are not the usual bloody Christion type, but made of blond tree
limbs. The women are not nailed to the crosses, but sort of perched, hapily
conversing with each other.

I say to Andy: "Ok, I get it, but where are the guys?" He shows me another
canvas that depicts a creek bank, out of which slowly appears a boy, or a
dog... I cant remember which...

Interpretations?

Hi:

Nicole, talking about Natalie Merchant, said:
>Have you noticed that, since she left 10,000 Maniacs... her head is a
bit disproportionate to the rest of her body?<

There could be two reasons for this, Nicole. The first, hydrocephalus, can
disfigure a person on its own or show up as a secondary manifestation of an
associated disease of the central nervous system, such as Arnold-Chiari
malformation. Then again, Ms. Merchant could be suffering from
megalencephaly, which can also manifest itself as a primary disease, or as
secondary to an associated disease of the central nervous system, such as
neurofibromatosis or tuberous sclerosis, or a metabolic-storage disease,
such as Krabbe's disease.

In either case, I hardly think her unfortunate circumstances warrant such a
vehement reaction from you ("After a while, though, I just want to yell
'SHUT UP' "). Let's try to have a little more tolerance toward the
misfortunes of others, hmm?

And while we're at it, let's make sure we keep strictly on-topic. I hate it
when people go off-topic.

That said, back to the fascinating discussion of instrument-and-equipment
lists (which has to do with XTC because they must use instruments and
recording equipment to make their music).

Herr Jeff sagte :
>Sacre moo, Homme de Batte, they're trying to kill us all!
This CANNOT work and you know it. Why? It's simple: The bounded sequence
of the logarithmic base is integrally proportional to the cotangent of the
square root of the matrix, times the rate of diffusion, convergent to the
y-intercept, when graphed octahedrally on a cotermind and consistently
expanding plane, when the angle of depression "b" is the deteminant of the
interpolation, increased in gradients by the chi-square value of pi.<

Well, duh. I never said my fix was conventional. I decided to sidestep the
physics and it worked for me (once), so it probably will for Dom. If not ...
ah well, at least there'll be no more talk in the digest about that annoying
"metal" music he seems so fond of.

It's not all bad. I've heard thaat Whole Foods is a

The Fishbone story reminds me of something-when I

Richie Stotts. Who is Richie Stotts, you ask? He was

Does anyone remember Trouser Press magazine? Sometime
back in the early '80's I remember them running a bit
where readers would imagine the careers of rock stars
had they never become famous. Some of them were
funny-Jello Biafra as a social worker, etc. The
poignent one was John Lennon-someone wrote that he
would be living.

Sounds like a fun game to me, how about it?

Usually I watch Due South, but it wasn't on last night at 6p
(11/2). So, while grazing, I find Comedy Central's usually
tepid SNL rerun, and there was Brian Wilson being interviewed
by Larry King!

Well, it wasn't really either of them, but Tim Robbins, doing
this doppelganging Brian Wilson impersonation. No makeup, no
anything, just his incredibly expressive face. It was so
spot-on it made me wince.

Recently I asked anyone to figure out "Green is the colour".
If you're breathlessly awaiting to know what it means, go to

paid some attention.

*completely* by accident. he was talking about how much he loved simple
minds (and he's only 19! is there no hope for the man?) and i scoffed
mightily. so he challenged me on my music taste and asked who my favourite
ever band were. XTC. no question. next day he scampers into my room waving
fossil fuels which he'd just bought in the city centre and had been playing
non stop! good grief! if only everybody i mention the band too would buy
fossil fuels on impulse! makes you glad to be alive - sniff - sniff.

Received & acknowledged, though I'm still pouty that you went & lost my
email address. Harumph. I think you should send Herr Rundgren a copy as
well, since he reportedly gave Andy so much grief over the
pronunciation.

Later on, Harrison Sherwood punted:

Well, if your tipoff can be believed, then the answer is Finnigans Wake,
though what any rational human being is doing within the vicinity of
that mischievous tome, I'm sure I don't know. Well, I'm waiting beside
the mailbox. Send on over my prize. A question though. Are the postage
rates affected depending on what hemisphere I'm located in? I've heard
about the controversial Double Corona force.

Well, as long as we have a Beach Boys discussion going on . . .

Has anyone ever noticed the similarity of the bass line in the verses of
"The Good Things" by XTC, and "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" by the
Beach Boys?

To DavidOh-
My "Big Express" CD's fine, but I have the Geffen version.

on another note, HELP!!!!

My god, I'm being drowned in music!!!! (although,"What a love-a-ly way for
me to go")

To many new CD's!!! Oy, vay, I can't take all this at onbce. I had just
gotten three Prefab Sprout CD's and John Linnell's new State Songs when I
went on a little "vay-cay" day tip to Boston to check out Berklee
(awsome). While I was in boston, I just happened to stumble into a Tower
Recods store, where I forced mysel to only buy two CD's, Elvis Costello's
"Trust" and Prefab Sprout's "Jordon: The Comback" then, while walking down
the street, a guy was selling used stuff on the sidewalk. So, I stoped,
and picked up a copy of Wilco's "Summer Teath" on tape. To top it all of,
When I got home, there was a package containing to CD-R's of the Bear's
first (and only) two albums. (Thanks Trish!!!!) Now I don't know which way
to turn, and, most importantly, which album to listen to. Not to mention
that I'm getting these sudden cravinfs for AV1 and The Big Express
(Thank's a lot for bringing the subject up, davidoh!!! {jk}) Plus I've got
PILES OF HOMEWORK to do, and I'm behind in my sleep. god, it's hard being
me.

(Now's the part when you all comfort me and tell me that I'll get through
it somehow... go on...)

One last thing, I've got a question for you all. I know this is EXTREMELY
EARLY TO ASK THIS QUESTION but what do you think XTC's Post-AV album will
be called (Asuming they have one) Do you think it will come from a AV1 or
AV2 song?

Waiting for your replies (and comfort)

Kevin "How about 'All Your Corn I'll Reap' for their next album? (jk)"
Diamond

P.S. or how about "do what you will but harm none"? (not jk) or "Do what
you will" or "harm none" if that's too long.

Not to nitpick, but Al Jardine and Carl Wilson did some writing on their
late 60's-early 70's albums; on my vinyl copy of Surf's Up there's two each
from both of them.(Jardine's offerings were earnest but a bit forced,
Carl's two songs were among the highlights of the album)Bruce Johnston
contributed the occasional song as well, such as "Disney Girls" from Surf's
Up, and his infamous "I Write The Songs"(yes, the one Barry Manilow did)was
recorded but never released(thank God). During the period when Brian wasn'r
performing with them, the remaining band members mostly picked up the
songwriting slack themselves, though Mike Love was mostly responsible for
picking outside material and I don't know that Dennis wrote much(though his
reportedly excellent solo album suggests that if he didn't he should have;
I've only heard little bits of it myself)
