i have sent a request to vh1 (see attached copy). we don't get mtv/vh1 here
in canada as we have our own music video channels, which i like to call
(not)muchmusic and (not)muchmoremusic. both carry some mtv programming,
especially (not)muchmoremusic, which carries the behind the music crap.
let's hope for some wisdom on their part.

On that note...please send another request, por favor...(one or two a week?)

i plan on bombarding them (vh1) once a week with the same request. is that
enough to satisfy you, debora?

here's what i sent to vh1:

a very good subject for a behind the music show topic would be xtc.

they've been around for yonks (20+ years), released 11 studio albums (each
one is unique) plus various compilations and/or live albums, had a few
books written about (and even by) them, are respected/admired by many
contemporary musicians (many have covered their songs), had rotten deals
with their manager and previous label, and yet are still producing top
quality pop music that at its worst is 1000 times better than 95% of
today's pop music.

they really deserve better respect from the industry than they have
received in the past.

their time has come! do the right thing!

thank you,

davidoh

so there you have it, proof that i did my part for xtc on vh1.

peace: live in it or rest in it

Dear Chalkers,

One of my countryfolk crept up again:

> I just learned that the Prince of Orange, a Dutch
> Prince, was instrumental in defending Descartes from
> criticism

mmmyes and no - it all depends on which Prince of Orange you are
talking about.
you see, technically all Dutch princes are princes from the house of
Orange-Nassau so the name has been used many times

In the UK people associate the title with their King William III, the
Dutch prince (and head-of-state) who married Queen Mary.
He played quite an important role in English and Irish history in the
last decade of the 17th century

But Andy once said that there is no hidden meaning in this song, the
words and phrases are just nonsensical; choosen for their sound
and rhyming qualities. And he did not have any particular prince in
mind either.

Finally, one more thing before i go:

> 2. Ted nugent and XTC can be purchased together.
probably, but can you consume them together _and_ remain
reasonably sane? i doubt it...

But what about this idea for the next XTC tribute album :
Good ol' Ted "Wollen Sie den totalen Rock und Roll?" Nugent
playing Melt The Guns

Obligatory Beach Boys content: i really like that one song, you
know, then one that goes like "doo dah doo dah doo-ooh doo-doo-
doo dah". But isn't that Brian dude like totally out there? i mean,
more beached than beach if you know what i mean

Hmm,
I seem to have a few hundred unread chalkhills as I havn't had time to read

I didn't even get to John Paul Jones first (ever) gig, since Zeppelin

Anyway just to say,

I know Beck is a bit of a sore point with some Chalkhills readers.

The new Beck CD, Midnight Vultures is pretty good, with hints of Mr Andy in
a lot of the tracks, circa Drums & Wires, GO2.

When it comes out give it. a try, failing that atleast choose Gomez for a
listen.

Chalkhillians,

Time to de-lurk, although there have been many recent
issues that I thought of commenting on; Most notably
the Christians and violence thing..... To which I
say.." To Hell with Religious Intolerance!!!" (
Thanks, Chris! )

Anyway...

Todd, your reply to Dom's Query:

Dom asked:

>Todd - do you have any advice on how to successfully
de-link my SSL 4000
"G" from the plasma metering unit? I've tried several
times (following all
the extraordinarily helpful gibberish in the manual)
but keep ending up
with the Axual F/G switch flicking off at some
inopportune moment (usually
just before the middle eight!)......any ideas?<

with:

>Anyway, flick on the rod and lightly spark the side
of >the integrator marked "matter" (NOT "anti-matter"
or >the neighbors will _really_ get pissed). This will
>disable the interruptive capacity of the Axual F/G
>switch, with the added benefit that the glow of the
>electrical arc will reveal a tiny chain lock behind
>the plasma metering unit. Gently yank their chain,
and >the unit should fall into your hand, assuming you
have >a free hand to catch it.

Is absolutely CLASSIC!!!!!!!! I mean it! I laughed
till I stopped!!!

And being the idiot that I am, I also looked up the
website: http://www.ikweb.com/hdh/sigmoid.htm.. Yes
my chain was yanked. ( Maybe that's why they call us

Oh, well..

Thats it for now.

First of all, I do not at all wish to complain. This is not a complaint.

I would like to thank over and over the daemon that inspired Mr. Ian
C. Stewart to create the "XTC Live and direct" page. It's the greatest of
treats for the lazy, cheap pseudocompletist that I am - I'd like to hear
everything but won't spare the time or the cash.

However, there appears to be a problem between my firewall and the
site... that is, I did not manage to download even a single one of the
pearls and treasures on that site!

The connection is slow as hell, links sometimes go broken (it appears that
Geocities pulled the plug on the "side" sites, so now anything under
"xtcliveanddirect1" refers me to a 404 page)... I'm sure it's not Ian's
fault, but Geocities'.

I was wondering: with sites such as Xoom donating unlimited free space, and
surely being more functional than geocities (none ever were less so), maybe
a mirror or even a whole site transfer could help?

(I could do it myself, instead of complaining, but hey, if I could've
downloaded the stuff in the first place, I wouldn't be complaining would
I?) (Oops, I'd said I *was not* complaining.)

Thanks again to Ian, and boos to Geocities for preventing me from taking
advantage of your stupendous effort.

Howdy, Chalkers.

XTC gets a mention in The Onion's "Cultural Idiocy Quiz"
this week;

"Described below are 15 pop-culture items that contain
military ranks in their names....
9. Early-'80s XTC song"

Old hat for most of those here, of course, but probably
tougher for the rest of the population.

More than a third of the questions have to do with music.

Has anyone ever come across an XTC promo video (what looks like) called
"mini Epic". It is but a few minutes long and would appear to be a promo for

never come across any reference to it since. It is a potted history of the
band themselves, by themselves, and very funny. Can anyone enlighten me

Grammy=mediocrity? Maybe, but not all the time. Bob
Dylan, Elvis Costello are two good guys (in my
opinion) who won grammys. Christopher Cross beat out
Pink Floyd's the Wall back in 1980, for best rock
album no less- now that's mediocrity! I remember
hearing about Nonsuch on the 92 grammys, and just to
make sure I wasn't dreaming it all and reporting a
bunch of bull here, I did some research (including
Chalkhills posts). Indeed, the best alternative
category is what it was up for. So let's all agree
that if and when an XTC album is up for a grammy, the
grammy thing becomes a little less mediocre, ok? On a
different topic, what if the Simpson's Nelson was the
guy who plays bass for New Model Army? HA HA! Cheers.

hello chalk-skid-marks,

in an earlier chalkpost, someone mentioned that they had a dream about xtc.

now, normally, 80-90 percent of my dreams are sexual ( i usually wake up
with the sheets twisted around me and i'm soaking wet - i don't understand
what this means...) with the remaining percentage being the usual
weird/bizarre types that are just plain inexplicable. i have had a couple
of dreams in the past about another band that, in hindsight, actually came
true eventually (more about that later).

however, last night i had a dream about xtc, which was the first time that
that has happened. this is how it went...

it took place in a small lecture hall. there was a dias on a stage with a
chalkboard next to it with what i think were the lyrics to "harvest
festival" written out on it. the first 2 rows in the audience were reserved
for celebrity guests, but i had a seat in the centre of the 3rd row. there
was an electric buzz in the air from the audience's anticipation of the
impending event.

soon, the celebrity guests were escorted into the hall and once they had
taken their seats, sitting right in front of me was pat mastelotto! we
exchanged greetings just before a huge round of applause filled the room.

andy partridge entered the hall on the stage and took his place behind the
dias.

that's when i woke up.

any psyco-analysts out there into dream interpretations?

the dreams that i had that actually came true involved the red hot chili
peppers.

i've had about four or five very similar dreams, over a period of about 8
years, where i met the band at an outdoor event and i ended up talking to
the band members at length about tattoos and guitars.

this past summer, the red hot chili peppers played a free outdoor show on
yonge street in downtown toronto. i weaseled my way backstage and met the
band after their performance. i ended up in a long conversation with chad
smith (the drummer) about tattoos (he has many, i have four), while flea
and i talked about bass guitars. it was only afterward that i remembered
those connections to the dreams i had.

i wonder if i'll start having recurring dreams about andy giving
lectures... hmmm...

 peace & xtc,

 davidoh

Ok, so if certain people did not end up famous, where would they be now...

Danny Elfman would have been a composer if he never was in Boingo :)

Joe Strummer a political activist

Robyn Hitchcock a Philosopher

Sting would be a marine biologist

Michael Hutchence would be a rock star (come on, I had to put that in
there!)

Thomas Dolby would work at the UK equivalent of Guitar Center in the Pro
Audio Dept

Les Claypool an auto mechanic

Morrissey a lonely depressed fool

Kurt Cobain would be a rock star (sorry, but really)

Gordon Gano would be a KMART employee

Suzanna Hoffs would be a famous rock star! (wooh aye yo)

Lene Lovich would work in shoe store

Iggy Pop a drug attic, or a Halloween ghostly figure at disneylands haunted
mansion

Stan Ridgeway would actually be famous

Frank Black would be a detective on a TV show

This is all I can see looking at my music collection. I could have thought
of a lot others, but I dont want to right now, besides, I want to see what
the rest of you picked.

Yo,

I spoke with Andy today. AV2 is moving along at a nice rate. According to
Andy it will be "simple".

Yes, he's still putting together "Fuzzy Warbles". Yes, many if not all of
the demos on "Jules Verne" and "Bull" will be included and even remixed and
cleaned up! He's thinking the whole deal will be something like 4 cds with
about 20 tracks on each.

"Homespun" is being stunted at 20,000 copies. However there will likely be a
similar item for AV2, probably called "Homegroan".

Over and out,

Personally I think that Billy Bragg's early stuff is largely brilliant,
especially the more political stuff. "Talking With The Taxman About Poetry"
and "Workers Playtime" are both superb albums, with a nice political/love
song balance. I sincerely hope this list isn't dumb enough to subscribe to a
"politics and music don't mix" viewpoint, because that really would be
Crassville, Idaho. No offence though, obviously....

>>*I* get sad when I hear about the death of people like Frank Zappa and
Steve
Marriott and Tim Brooke Taylor

Is Tim Brooke Taylor dead? Nobody told me!!!! You would have thought that
Bill Oddie deserved an untimely demise more than Mr Taylor....

>>Knowing our luck, however, this appearance will be
replaced with one from Classix Nouveau or Modern Romance.

My money's on Blue Zoo.

>>If not ...
ah well, at least there'll be no more talk in the digest about that annoying
"metal" music he seems so fond of.

Yeah right! Does metal still exist by the way? I only ask because I'm a
fucking moron with my head up my anus.

XTC content? Oh all right then.......I just spoke with Alex Newport, the
guitarist and singer from late 80s/early 90s grungecore supremos Fudge
Tunnel (ask your cool, Metal-fan friends) and apparently XTC is one of his
favourite bands. Now there's a turnip for the books.....

Ciao!

my god, it's been what, a week since I posted? I was quite worried-- I
thought I was dead.

David Oh pondered Billy Bragg--
>i agree. i've been on the fence about mr. bragg's music - some is good,
>some is just too political for my tastes - but "don't try this at home" is
>a very good album. for those who don't know, it features johnny marr, peter
>buck, jody linscott and kirsty maccoll. i especially like "sexuality"
>(well, wouldn't you?) and "moving the goalposts".

that is truly the most accessible Bragg album-- I found his earlier stuff
rather dense, no matter how much I agreed with his politics. This reminds
me, though, of a period around the time "Don't Try this at Home" came out,
when Billy Bragg was staying with Peter Buck in Athens, Georgia for a while.
I was living in Atlanta at the time, and heard a very funny interview with
him on Album 88 (Georgia State University radio). He talked about a charity
concert he did in LA where the promoter sent a limosine to pick up Bragg and
his band. Bragg found this generally embarassing, and actually received
some interesting looks from people at the concert, because, not only was it
a charity concert, but Bragg is very publicly a socialist. he also talked
about running around the miniature Stonehenge outside of Athens, GA.

Then David Oh continued with a Grammy diatribe in response to Travis
Schulz--
>I'm not a Grammy buff by any measure - but the recognition of it all
>would be awful nice, not to mention that good surge in album sales
>that can come with it.
>
>considering that the grammies has been nothing but a celebration of
>mediocrity since its inception, i don't think xtc meets their criteria in
>the first place.
>
> >Nonsuch (my favorite much of the time) was nominated in 92; I think
>in the alternative category
>
>are you sure about this? i have my doubts about music as good as xtc's
>being nominated by such a bland organization as n.a.r.a.s., and in the
>alternative category? alternative to what? insipid mediocrity? well, yes,
>now that i think of it, xtc _is_ an alternative to what n.a.r.a.s. thinks
>is music.

David! breathe! I think Travis mentioned the fact that it doesn't matter
what the NARAS thinks-- it would just be *nice*. Yes, I remember Nonsuch
being nominated, and Tom Waits won. Granted, I hate the grammys, and I'll
harp on the fiasco of Jethro Tull as the first Best Hard Rock award, but
they gave an award to Tom Waits! I have to like that, just as I'd like it
if XTC was nominated again (or even won). Publicity is publicity, and it
may have partially been grammy publicity that had DC's "alternative" station
(HFS-- those of you in the area know how little that term applies these
days) still playing "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" in reasonable rotation
three years after the album came out.

Steve Oleson inquires on the nature of dreams--
>The crosses are not the usual bloody Christion type, but made of blond tree
>limbs. The women are not nailed to the crosses, but sort of perched, hapily
>conversing with each other.
[...]
>Interpretations?

don't read Harrison's posts at bedtime. (damn interesting dream, though. I
just dreamt that my hair got long again and I got fat.)

sigh...back to temping...where is that ringing phone coming from?...

Tim Brooke Taylor? The least funny one out of The Goodies? Dead? You sure
about that?

Elsewhere....

It is definitely 'Avon lady', ie. someone selling Avon cosmetics
door-to-door (hence 'fills the creases')>

Presumably Virgin, being the wussy dogs they are, thought Avon might sue?
Although they let the word "Sony" pass. Maybe not...either way they
castrated the single when they released it, so who knows how little bottle
the Virgin had at the time...
