Are you sure you're talking about Mummer here? As far as I can remember
(although I could be wrong) isn't "Wonderland" the only track on the album
which employs a drum machine? If you were talking about the Big Express I
could understand it more, particularly as the Linn drums on This World Over
and All You Pretty Girls make the songs sound a little dated. They'd have
been better songs still had a real drummer played them (IMO of course)

Greetings chalkizens.

Gary in his infinite wisdom spouted this fine non-abusive post
recently.

From: "Gary Hooper" <hooperg@bigpond.com>
Subject: An Open Letter To Dom Lawson

"Hey, Dom,"

"You may well exhibit this trait in person, but over the net it just
looks pathetic, and a kind of cowardice."

Gee unlike what you are spouting Gary which is just amazingly heroic,
your purple heart is in the mail. Goddamn I am going to petition
Congress right now to start a Gary Hooper national holiday.

Dear sirs,
Please start a holiday for Gary since he made Chalkhills safe for women
and children from the big bad Dom Lawson threat. The world is now a
much nicer place.

PLEASSSEEE!!!! GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

"Either this list is open for the public, or it isn't,"

Damn fine writing that and it states your opinion so well.

" and John can close down the invitation to join the list in
"Chalkhills" and keep it an increasingly inbred and
self-congratulatory clique, disdainful of outsiders and jealously
guarding "insider knowledge"."

God forbid the formula should get into the hands of the wrong people
and get dispersed to the masses. Oh my god! XTC might have, GASP! A
hit record!! Oh NO, Not that!!!! What insider knowledge? Mitch has
Insider knowledge, Amanda has knowledge, Richard talks to the man,
Simon talks to him too. Do you think they are in some kind of a secret
society or something. OOOOPPPSSS here is a flaw in the theory this
stuff gets posted on the internet for everyone to see. Thus it becomes
PUBLIC knowledge. Next contestant please!

"Do you think your supercilious posturing has a place on a list
devoted to the works of artists whose entire careers would indicate
contempt for such nonsense? What would they think?"

They would think you were extremely lame if "supercilous posturing" was
the best insult you could come up with. Andy has admited in public to
giving himself a good daily wank-off. Do you really thing he gives a
rip what Dom is doing today. GET REAL!! He is laughing his ass off at
all of us. Lighten up! They are a pop group, not nobel prize
candidates. And I think I have enough knowledge of the guys to know
that they enjoy a good laugh and a joke as well as anyone. Maybe you
should use them as role models.

"Go back to kicking sick dogs in the street - at least then there's the
chance one will bite back and give you rabies."

Are you comparing yourself to a rabid dog Gary?

Well here is an idea. BITE ME!

"parliament.uk" eh? Says a lot.

bout as much as bigpond.com you narrow minded nationalist. How the hell
can you infer anything from his web provider. Yes Dom is employed by
the British Parliament. And that means what?

What a completly ignorant thing to crab about. Exactly what is your
point? You don't like Dom's posts? DON"T READ THEM! Get over it,
whatever. But don't bitch to me, I think they are brillaint and I don't
seem to recall you posting anything better, ever! so leave the policing

Hello Children,

A recent Chalkopic has been whether we should have expulsions or
penalties for what is considered by some to be bad form or abusive
posts.
I personally have had off line discussions with both Dom Lawson and
Simon Deane and have high opinions of both of them.

I personally believe that you are wrong Simon. I don't believe in
Internet Censorship and I would like to remind you that this group is
moderated by an excellent individual named John Relph who does a great
job of keeping things running smoothly. I will bow to what John says
but I think that if you hang the threat of expulsion over contributors
to this group it will become stale and boring. This is my opinion, I am
not stating it as a fact. Also I fail to see what indignities you think
Dom and the others have been posting. I understand your intent about
the wind-ups but honestly what harm has it done and is this any
different than what occurs in work places all over the world every day.
Dom and Todd and Harrison were having a private joke in a public place
I agree but what is wrong with that really? The work place has become
very sensitive to the feelings of all the employees, overly so in my
opionion. Life is not always fair or just and to try to emulate that
type of Shargri-la on the web I think is a futile venture.
I do not believe that this leisure time place needs those rules and I
think they will do more harm than good.

I thank you however for posting your opinions and suggestions in a
logical, moderate way and I think you have done an excellent job of
stating your view in a mostly unemotional way. Others could learn from
your approach and I thank you for using it.

A recent post about "The Adventure Club Sessions" CD from texas and
George Gimarc caught my eye and I thought I would add the fact that
George is a great guy and he regularly lists these CDs for sale. I
bought one from him about a year ago. I don't think these items are
rare but if you are interested by all means George is a stand up guy
and you should not hesitate to do business with him. Also of note
George wrote two books on the Punk?New Wave thing and XTC has content
in both and on their accompanying Compact Discs. Both "Punk Diary" and
"Post Punk Diary" are available from Amazon.com for about $16. I highly
reccomend them as an interesting read into the punk/new waves scenes.

Also Mike posted about Colins Demo's recently in regards to Fuzzy
Warbles.

>Does anyone else remember this? About a year ago, Andy said that one
>problem in putting together Fuzzy Warbles was the almost total lack of
>Colin Moulding demos. Now, Mr. Ian Stewart says to us all, "hold on, I've
>got 2 zillion Colin demos (actually about 20-something) up on my Website".
>This sounds like great news since it seems to prove the existence of these
>treasures. Now, does Mr. Stewart have to get in touch with the band and
>present to them some things that he might have and they don't?

I would like to correct this a bit. The statement in question was from
Andy and what he said was that it was more difficult to find old stuff
from Colin as he made a habit of reusing the same tapes to record his
demos where as Andy used new or newer tapes more often so more of his
old stuff exists. It simply is a matter of Colin having recorded over
tracks that he wasn't happy with and Andy having saved his to perhaps
be used in a different way later. Colin stuff does exist and Andy never
said it didn't he simply said there was less of it available.

As far as the tracks that Ian had posted on his excellent site.(**See
below please Ian). They have been available to XTC tape traders for a
good while and I had no difficulty in obtaining them. They are also for
the most part very recent in comparison to the AP demo's that I have
which go back nearly all the way to the genus of XTC. AND Andy writes
more than Colin anyway, at a pace of probably 3 to 1 so if Warbles is a
4 disc set I would guess that Colin's content will comprise less than
one disc total.
Here's hoping I am completly wrong and the lads unearth some really
rare stuff.

Also thanks to Richard and Mitch for the recent posts. I think we all
underestimate how lucky we are that these guys keep us so informed. I
for one thank them very much for their efforts and can't wait to hear
what comes next.

Thanks guys,

  mole

**more downloadable tracks please Ian, I have had a hard time
maintaining a good link and a demo that dies in the middle is a
horrible thing Thanks for your work!

Chalkers,

You know, every time I listen to Colin's "Car Out Of Control," I think:
"Goddamn, what a great song this is!" Do you think this, too? I'll bet
you do.

On another note: I've given in. I can't take the wait anymore. Would
anyone be willing to hook me up with a CD-R copy of the new demos
("Boarded Up," "Stupidly Happy," etc.)? I don't have much to trade at
the moment, but could definitely track down some stuff when I go home
for break. Actually, I think I have an unopened copy of the "Nonsuch
Adult Contemporary Sampler" that I'd be more than willing to part
with...and I've got access to REM and Toad the Wet Sprocket boots that
can tape and trade for. (I myself don't have ready access to a CD
burner, unfortunately.) I could also send money.

And to think -- way back in '96, when I had a copy of those "new Andy
demos," I was on the top of the trading heap. Now I'm begging. Isn't
it amazing how things change? ;-)

Cheers,
Ben

Very funny, and very true!

As for cancelling MST3K from the Sci-Fi Channel - I would be quick to doubt
anyone who suggested that this happened mostly due to politics. If the show
were pulling in great ratings, I don't think anyone would axe it. And if
they really wanted to appear "serious," they should have ditched some of
the melodramatic and laughable programs and movies they end up repeating ad
nauseum and bring back "Max Headroom" (the ABC series, not the Cinemax one).

>I only wanted to chime in and say that, while it's true the show was

I think Dan's pretty much on the money here. Even if Sci-Fi wanted to keep
the show, I would be reluctant to watch. Over the run of the show, I saw a
few brilliant episodes, a lot of hit-and-miss episodes and one hillarious
movie. There is such a thing as beating a dead horse.

>Speaking of MST3K--this has tangential XTC content, which you will see if

>miss it! I can't win. I'm contemplating stealing a satellite dish.

I, too, am ready to convert to the world of a dish. Only trouble is, I live
in an apartment complex. I would get one of those DSS dishes, just to get
some music videos on M2 every once in a while, where I could see some
artists I actually RESPECT (and perhaps a chance to see an XTC video!)... I
turned on MTV the other night, and they were playing some video called "Get
Naked" which started with a low angle shot of a naked man lying in bed
holding a long remote control between his legs. Yeah, that's subtlety for
ya! Oh, did I mention the glowing genitals?... never mind.

Not enough XTC content for the nitpickers?

Okay, I just discovered that the DVD Music "magazine" Circuit featured XTC
in their second "issue." This came as a complete surprise to me, because I
bought issues 1:1 and 1:3 but never saw 1:2 available in a store anywhere!!
If the discs I already have are an indicator, there should be some
interview material and at least one song to hear. If they had released a
video for AV1, it would have been on there too, I'm sure... Now to track
that disc down...

Me, too! Me, too! I had an XTC dream last weekend.
Mixed in among my usual dreams involving levitation
and forgotten locker combinations, I dreamt that I
went to an outdoor music festival. Colin and Andy were
sitting on stools in the middle of a field, playing
acoustic. Andy played a cover of Yoko Ono's song "I
Felt Like Smashing My Face Through A Clear Glass
Window". I got excited because I was the only one in
the audience who recognized the song, so I decided to
stand behind him and sing backup. This is a ridiculous
dream, of course, because anyone familiar with this
song knows that it just doesn't sound like something
Andy would sing. After the song was over, I told Andy
that the band Of Montreal had also covered the song
and he looked surprised. And that's it. Not too
elaborate. Not too symbolic (I don't think). But nice
all the same.

As an inveterate lurker, I can only cringe and cower so long before
something shakes me donkey up so much that I, against my better judgement,
must shake off the shackles of wilful obscurity and, groan, respond.

At first, I found the whole "SSL 4000" thing to be quite funny really, but
it soon became, if not tedious, then a little overwrought. Little was I to
know the tedium that awaited.

When I first read Simon Doane's post in #5-305, I thought it was brilliant;
just the thing to inject some life into an increasingly boring thread.

Mais non. It turns out that that hilariously tortured earnestness was
actually, um, earnest (importance of, see: Velvet Goldmine). I read the
post in #5-308 in disbelief: "Oh, he MEANS it".

I will not be the first or last to give kudos to Mssrs. Lawson and Sherwood
for their defiantly individual slant on all things XTC-and-not-related.
These are ideas, people, whether you like them or not. Sure, we could spend
all our time talking about what XTC song we heard in the 7-11 and how cool
that was (not that there's anything wrong with that), or, we could try to
fill the gaps between XTCD'S with something a little different, or, God help
us, fun?

I would also suggest that, at certain risk to my future well-being, if Mr.
Relph should excommunicate these sarcastic hooligans from Chalkhills he
might also purge all self-righteous berks at the same time.

Nicole asked-
>Is there ANYONE out there that REALLY likes "I can't own her" ?

Yes, I love it too. The visual I get with it is swirling skys like
Vincent's Starry Starry Night, only more refined somehow...gold?...with
harps, and a swelling flush of violins.

-Then there's the bass harmonicas like in my parent's "Harmonicats"
music...but it works.
-A bitter pill taken with rain- clever clever! (like my favorite crawling
the wallpaper looking like a...)
- the staggered backing vocals that are so simple yet sounded so complex at
first. It took me days to understand the rhythm to "ofallthethings
yougotthethingyou want the mostisher..." duh.
-the tense weak opening strings portrays the frustration of that situation,
perhaps building to the more relaxed plodding "I can't own her.." after
accepting it.

I love it even moreso now after reading Andy's personal comments about it
in Homespun. I just ended a relationship with someone I "couldn't have"
and he seemed to be (killing me softly with his words). That song was my
mantra for weeks and weeks. And his comment that worst of all- he'd
appeared *romantic*- yes I can see how it's not cool for him, and I
appreciated his sentiment... (trying hard not to imagine him washing
Erica's hair/Out of Africa style) sorry, but I digress like a woman...
godd- that first paragraph was priceless....

In reponse to the typewriter font in the liner notes- I'm a graphic
designer, recognized the font right away. Someone from TVT would have to
provide Cactus Design the copy, they would have layed it out and given it
back to TVT to approve- maybe showing it to Andy and Colin or maybe not,
depending on how involved they were in the details of it. It's possible it
was dealt with entirley by the label and the design studio. Anyway, it
reminded me of the liner notes on TB that are so damn hard to read. Ultra
hip and illegible.

Did I miss any discussion regarding Andy's statement that Greenman is
English folk music inspired and not Indian inspired? I was dumbfounded-
after hearing the warbling he does on "pleaeaese to bend down..." on
Homespun- c'mon- I didn't think that's how the guys in green tights in the
forest sing, is it? Call me the village idiot too, but I guess I don't
know enuf about English folk music... I'm seeing sari's and dots, too.
Amazing how we can *so* not understand him... makes me wonder what else I
have really misinterpretted.

and Nicole said-
>Gary's open letter to Dom:
>the really ugly,
>bullying side of your personality rears to bludgeon.....it just looks
>pathetic, and a kind of cowardice.

I have to agree, the Dom & Sherwoods posts are just a Cleverness Contest,

I ran into a few of the people who work on Space Ghost Coast to Coast at a

appearance on Space Ghost. While all involved that I've spoken to
personally thought that Andy was a fantastic guest (the woman who books the
guests said that he was easily the funniest she'd seen!), they've just got
many more interviews than they have time to produce shows around them.

I suppose that means that: a) the people that I talk to are lying to me and
that they actually thought Andy was a miserable guest. OR b) that being
talented, interesting, funny and all-around great doesn't mean that you're
gonna get on television before somebody less interesting but more
marketable.

Now I must return to Yahoo Chat to start some arguments.

Reminds me of Vini Reilly of Durutti Column announcing the next song to the
crowd at a concert in Tokyo in 1985 , " ... Bruce (drummer Bruce Mitchell)
doesn't know this one . " Love it ... Any other DC fans out there in
XTCland?

Hey XTC fans, there is a new release by an outfit known as "Shecky". Their
debut is called "Yummy" and it's loaded with twisted pop that's very XTC
influenced along with Jellyfish/Beatles/Robyn Hitchcock. You can get it at
cdfreedom.com and check out samples there, ENJOY, Tiny.

Ah, good old Robyn Hitchcock. Another wonderfully spontaneous and rough
performance has just been released -- Pere Ubu's "Apocalypse Now", a
mostly-acoustic set performed for the heck of it in a small club on what
would've otherwise been a night off for them while they were on tour with
the, um, Pixies, I think, in 1991. Pere Ubu with acoustic piano instead of
squawking analog syntheizer? Yes. It's great. I think I have to go listen
to it right now, actually.
