Dan,
I guess many of the "obscurantists", myself included, feel
there's little point in referring to REM, U2, Beck and all the other
major acts. Everybody is likely to have been exposed to them (willingly,
or otherwise).

Hello Chalkaholics,
I hope this isn't old news already.
On a whim I surfed on over to CDNow and lo and behold, they are taking pre-
orders for AV1. At $12.49 plus S&H, it sounds like a good deal. They have the
release date still listed as Feb 23.
Thanks to all the folks out there for their recommendations and best of lists.
They have pointed me in the direction of some really great music that I would
have never heard about.

There is so much to say! Yikes!
1) Anyone noticed that there are two copies of "Apple Venus" being auctioned
off on eBay? I stopped bidding at $40 -- quite a bit for a CD, wouldn't you
say? There's still time to bid on both, so I hope some lucky 'Hillian gets
'em.
2) Today, I bought "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" and Suzanne Vega's
"99.9F." Both are amazing albums, for completely different reasons...I'd
recommend them without reservation. Also, because of Dean (and other
Chalkers), I picked up the New Radicals' album "Maybe You've Been
Brainwashed, Too." At first, I found the single ("You Get What You Give")
incredibly annoying, but it's growing on me. "Mother, We Just Can't Get
Enough" is also a wonderful song (with possibly the strangest spoken intro
I've ever heard!)
3)I'm so so so so so excited about "AV1." I'll even buy the LP, so I can
hang it in my XTC shrine! ;-)
4) While babysitting last night, I saw my first "Rugrats" episode. According
to the credits, Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh wrote the music. Weren't they in
Devo? Ha ha. "Are we not men? We are car-toons...!"
5) If I need to say this every post, I will: Babybird's "Ugly Beautiful"
should be in your collection. So should "There's Something Going On," but
buy "UB" first. (College students can be so annoying, can't they?)
Hmmm...That's about it. I'm driving back to college tomorrow, so I'll
cyber-talk to y'all from Maine next time. And I think it'd be great to get
some sort of Internet chatroom going when "AV1" is released...The power of
the 'Net is magical, ain't it?

I think it's probably a futile thing to compare REM and XTC, 'cos they're just so damn different. (Let's face it, XTC are so different to *any* other band!) I do think that REM used to be quite brilliant at what they did. In common with one or two other posters on the list I think they lost it once they signed to Warners. Automatic was good, Green had a couple of moments, but everything else has been quite dire. (Soz, but I really don't like "Up", I think Stipe's voice has done a Stevie Nicks!) But nothing will ever touch Life's Rich Pageant. That album is utterly superb. (Don Gehman, *top* producer.) The best gig I ever saw was in 1987 at the Hammersmith Odeon - REM (on the "Document" tour) supported by 10,000 Maniacs. Once we'd got over how brilliant 10,000 Maniacs were, we thought that REM were going to embarass themselves, but no-oooo. They were absolutely incredible. Pete Buck threw himself round the stage like an American Pete Townshend to be the focal point of the evening. I know he's not technically the best guitarist that ever lived, but he played some great riffs in his time and I just lurve that Rickenbacker/AC30 sound! I think that they got so big they got like U2, where they could fart down the mic and still sell a billion copies. Much of the public only like bands when they get huge, so there's a snowball effect. 'Oh, s/he's got "Wind Down the Mic" by REM, so I'd better buy it too.' It gets to the point where it's not really got so much to do with music, more to do with fashion. It must be really hard to keep your musical integrity when you know you can get away with making crap and sell shed loads of it. One last thing, I have to disagree with the posting about Chalkhills being like a dying dog (apologies, I can't remember who it was who made the posting). I'm really enjoying it at the moment, I think it's vibrant. The fact that there's a digest most days from a discussion group of a band that's released nothing new in seven years is staggering! I'm especially enjoying the outspoken postings of people like Duncan (even though we disagree on so much! <g>) and Dom. It'd be really dull if we all agreed on everything!

Anyway, on the whole it's as I expected it to be in that the session versions of the later songs, generally don't shine as the studio versions do. Things like "Seagulls" really badly lack the wonderful atmosphere of the album. (I think there are noteable exceptions like Scarecrow People, which I love on TB). The thing that really strikes me though are the session versions of the earlier songs. You can see why they chose Life Begins at the Hop as the opener. It is *stunning*. Just bursting with life and energy. Roads Girdle the Globe is another one that really impresses me. I never really got on with the Drums and Wires version, but again it just has all the energy that Steve Lillywhite has always been incabable of harnessing. (Steve Lillywhite: surely the world's most overrated producer. Yes, I know he didn't produce all the earlier stuff.) I didn't realise what fantastic guitar *sounds* that Andy and Dave used to get playing live (I only got into XTC "properly" when English Settlement was released and never saw them live, sadly). I quite like the second live CD, again some of the guitar sounds are just fantastic; it's just a shame some of them are played at breakneck speed and tend to loose some of the subtelty, which I don't think is always made up for in the energy of the performance. They were bloody tight though, it's all very impressively played! It's really brilliant to hear "new" stuff with Terry drumming. Does anyone else have the song book of the lyrics/chords for some of the early stuff? There's a great quote from Terry that goes something along the lines of "'ere, do you reckon those fuckers in Kaftans will 'ave our hands off if we ask for another drink?" I'm sure someone will know the exact quote, it's a long time since I saw the book though... the comment like his drumming wasn't the most subtle, but I miss him! All in all, definitely worth eighteen quid...

Re: Raygun Interview and recent interviews in general I too was somewhat taken aback by Andy's comments in the interview and to some extent the content of his interview posted at Little Lighthouse. And even Terry(I'm tired of talking about the greatest band in the world that I walked away from) Chambers's interview for that matter. There's lots of negativity and indifference coming from the XTC camp. I assume there will be more. Hopefully nothing too cringe worthy. I know Andy's bitter these days (and to some extent with good reason) but geez! Since he is now aware of us, and has alluded to us in print, hopefully we won't end up getting blasted...though it's not as if we haven't ranted about what he should and shouldn't do with his life. I don't know. It's cool to read all these interviews/articles after all of this time but I can't help but be a little worried that Andy's scorching comments might make a the forthcoming Apple taste a little sour to me. You must now hear my rant about....Ally McBeal. What is the Deal with that show? It's so well written and acted but it is so damn annoying. Producer David Kelley's musical tastes are so MOR it's sick making. I think that's what kills me the most. If he was into XTC or something but Christ. When that girl sings those sappy 70's covers, I want to run for the hills. But I can't. Because that show is like a car crash. You just can't turn away. And you never know what the hell is going to happen. Bruce Willis randomly appeared this week as a shrink. Zowie! Suck on that dittoheads. I gotta go. I hear there's a KKK rally coming up. Problem with CD-R is that you either have a cheap CD-Rom you can write on only once, and then it's done. Or you take terribly expensive CD-Rewrites, that cost about 10 (hehe, just found the Euro symbol on my keyboard) in Germany, and only run on a special CD-RW player which is expensive, too. Minidiscs don't cost a lot, are rewriteable and the players aren't expensive, too. Still, they're crap somehow, some people say, as they simply cut off frequencies in the low areas (below 30 Hz, I think), when these frequencies are so quiet you can't hear them anyway (according to the Phon curves). The same is done with extremely high frequencies. Still, it's proven that humans can distinguish sounds which have these frequencies from sounds that haven't. But does one hear such sounds in pop music ? No. You find these in classical avantgarde, but then you'll only hear it , and people that have heard it were in such a situation, I'd suppose; in a test room in a studio were you have like $10,000 speakers and cables who are $ 2000 per meter. So, I don't hear a difference from minidisc to neither vinyl nor CD nor self-recorded stuff on a 8-track, and my ears aren't that bad. I'd say, a minidisc is a better alternative to a CD-RW, not as good as a DAT tape, though. Unfortunately, I don't own anything like that, just my old tape from a secondhand market (and turntable and CD of course). (And NO, I'm not in any way representing a minidisc company) 2.
