Saturday afternoon; a time to catch up on all the posts.
I don't know if the latest amount of posts to Chalkhills is normal, but it
seems to be a healthy stack. It took me the better part of 2 hours to finish
reading. In the future I will certainly know better than to wait a week to
read posts.
..And now, the odd thoughts continue...
Here and now I would like to congratulate all that have brought their
list of band names to light. It's refreshing to hear someone else's ideas on
this particular item. No list from me today, although I have one as well. The
one band name from our merry little posts that should receive the "Milk Shot
Out My Nose" award would have to be - "Joe Funk Yourself". Joe Funk will be
getting the requisite "It's not my fault, it's my name!" Award.
In and around the Fort Wayne, Indiana area there is a high school
radio station. They play a constant rotation of at least 4 or 5 XTC songs. I
don't live there, but rather have occasion to visit on mondays and
wednesdays. If you are interested in checking them out, they are on the web
at WJHS.org. So far, I have heard Greenman, I'm the Man Who Murdered..,
Sense Working Overtime, and I believe a couple from Skylarking/Oranges &
Lemons era. It's not a great radio station. Consider the alternatives in that
area and you'd be hard pressed to listen to anything else.
On a similar note: While in Fort Wayne a couple of weeks ago I
happened to spot a music shop tucked into a strip mall. Once inside I found a
section in the back of the store of LP's. I found a still in wrapper, mint
condition vinyl of Oranges and Lemons! Hoop-De-Doo!!! Price- $2.99 Needless
to say I'm happier for it.
I went to see "Me, Myself & Irene" a fortnight ago. Pure Shat! The
Farrelly Bros. have done nothing for me except to possibly make me move
uncomfortably around in my seat.
Lastly.. On thursday night I spent some of my hard earned money on
something worthwhile, I saw The Tragically Hip. They were in town for two
straight nights, at a local music venue. I strongly suggest the live show to
everyone. If you happen to have heard their music on the radio, which in the
States is a rarity, but have not "got it", then try seeing them live. I
guarantee it will be an great experience. Anyone looking for a little insight
to The Hip should go to the website - www.thehip.com The new look is
fantastic. If you would like to hear my biased review of their show from July
13 in Grand Rapids Mi. then feel free to e-mail me. I would be happy to share
with you some info on this great band.

HI kids,
First, I must second Robert Wood's assessment & opinion on Jen Trynin's
(proper spelling) "Gun Shy Trigger Happy". This album is one of my
favorites of all time and I can play it for days on end. Of course, many
of you know that Dave Gregory played on her first record, "Cockamamie",
but her second, and for now most current, is simply fabulous.
Now, how about this for a new XTC thread to follow Wes' "Most meaningful
track on each album" (how ya feelin' Wes)?
You're going to burn a CD-R of fav tracks, but you have to keep the
original track order of each song. For example, for track 1, you would
have to choose from all the track 1's on each album, for track 2 all the
the track 2's, etc. I haven't done this yet because I can't get past
choosing between "Respectable Street" & "Playground", but I'll work on it.
Greatest Hits/Complilations don't count; only official Virgin/TVT released
studio albums (and not their re-releases with bonus tracks either). You
don't have to pull a track from each album and you can stop at anytime as
long as your last track was the last track on a particular album
("Nonsuch" has 17 tracks - the most of any other album I believe so
"Bungalow" & "Books are Burning" would then have to be chosen if you went
that far). Otherwise you can go with 15 tracks a la "English Settlement"
although the majority seem to have 14. So, now that the lengthy details &
rules have been laid out - off you go!

p.s. - Now that I think of it, there's no rule that you have to make only
1 CD-R with the above contest, but let's limit it to one double CD-R (two
CD's in other words). Just to make it a little easier.

I don't want to be too cruel to you, Molly, but I think you're way off base. "You won't get anywhere with UNIX" is a very ignorant (in a literal sense - ie "uninformed") viewpoint. I have a little UNIX experience, since that's what my university used for managing their student internet machines. I also know several programming and developer types, two of which went on to work at Netscape. You might be surprised to know that UNIX is the backbone of quite a lot of the internet and its associated applications. And you might also be surprised to know that once Apple transitions to their upcoming OS X (ten), the Macintosh will nearly become a UNIX machine! Apple makes no bones about this because UNIX is an amazingly stable platform and their current OS is essentially an unstable hack of an interface that was originally designed for the first Mac in 1984! I have read some background on this new OS and I can't wait to get it on my machine. And I'll conclude by saying the same thing I said to Brian: This issue isn't about whether your computer can handle the content, it's about the tenets of good design and good *communication*!! = Derek =

To be fair, most real American kids in the '70s probably didn't have a clue
that XTC were releasing albums. :-)
British VH1 doesn't show The List, which, from the sound of it, is probably
just as well. Mind you, That '70s Show isn't on any more over here, either.

They actually could have been a pretty good rock and roll band with horns if they'd kicked Peter Cetera out of the band the minute he showed up with one of his syrupy love songs. Guitarist Terry Kath was a pretty good Hendrix-influenced guitarist, and as long as he was fronting the band they were far preferable to Blood Sweat and Tears. Unfortunately that was less and less often with each successive album, and he died playing russian roulette in his kitchen after Chicago 11 in the late 70's. He was never adequately replaced, and subsequent releases went from uneven and directionless to loaded with the sappy Peter Cetera ballads we all know and hate. After Peter Cetera left they were listenable but faceless, might as well have been Survivor or something. I'd say a better candidate for a worst of is anything that Peter Cetera did solo. I hate that puke. Another worst of: anything by Dr Hook not written by Shel Silverstein. Especially that guy with the crying voice who sings most of their hits. Thank God they're probably doing the Vegas circuit and stopped having hits in the 80's. I'm going to lay off Barry Manilow, though, he's too easy a target; besides, he's done a couple of decent jump blues influenced things that my wife made me listen to, and he's covered an Ian Hunter song, though he turned it into an overproduced wedding cake. And, for a bonus, I'll give you a list of impossibly cheesy 70's one hit wonders that are guaranteed to send you running screaming from your room. 1, Seasons In The Sun- Terry Jacks 2. (maybe it's the same in the uk and irleand, i don't know. i did actually see bono on mtv or vh-1 say something like, "it's frank's planet and we're all just his guests." this is a stupid sentiment no matter where it's coming from.) this is why i like the movie "swingers." it exposes the twenty-somethings' cult of frank, in l.a. (west hollywood to be specific) for what it is: a (decontextualized) vehicle, a revival of sorts, by which a bunch of horny male dorks can bond and attempt to get laid. sometimes that's a funny premise and sometimes it isn't. it's certainly not a new one but when the setting is late '90s la-la guys trying to ape the martini set of the '40s-'50s, it is funny. it's because they seem to capture everything about their heros minus actual understanding of what made their style great. you add good dialogue, plus people who can act and you get a funny movie. had andy seen swingers he might have understood that now is not the time to say ANYTHING against frank (if you're in the u.s. and are a part of the pop cultch landscape). people are taking it very seriously again, just like the guys in the movie who think that long, hot motor trips to las vegas will save their lives. as for the "stairway to heaven thing," i don't get it...didn't anyone there see "wayne's world"? maybe they were too young. was it that long ago? what about the butthole surfers "hairway to steven?" just the title alone broadcasts loud and clear that some people know that song is overplayed. now that i'm thinking on it, i wonder if andy would do well in the "politically incorrect" scene.
