It's 73 degrees and gorgeous. Yesterday, in the sweltering 72 degree sun-shiney day, I was washing my windows to remove the 2 years of grime, and actually broke a sweat while washing them buggers; and all the while, I thought it appropriate to pull out the illustrious Apple Venus Volume I, and take a spin while cleaning. This is the appropriate time of the year for this album in my Humble opinion. A lot like Skylarking. Not because I had to clean my windows, but because of the awakening of life in it's transition from winter to spring. The whole *Easter* Theme. Even the bulbs below my front picture window are now beginning to peak out and un-earth themselves....ah yes, walking on my hands into London... I just can't listen to this album at any other time of the year though. I over-heard it after it's release one year ago (Happy Anniversary!) and it really became dormant through summer, fall and winter. Now, it's all I listen to from the band. Although, that was a lie, I have been rehearsing on the kit to Black Sea, but enjoying the music in a different way, as opposed to just listening to AV II and cleaning house.... This years purchases have been strange for me. I have become a total and unequivocal X-Files Mythology - junkie. Watching re-runs and the weekly show. So I bought the score to the X Files Movie. Mark Snow scored it and produces most if not all of the shows' music. It's just brilliant! Mark Snow is just brilliant. His music is sooooooo emotional that you cannot help but *FEEL* how the actors feel at a certain point in the show; besides which, it's just so creapy that you feel a chill down your spine in addition to the emotional connections you make with the actors. Ok, done gushing now. So after listening to that score for 56 times, which is a complete symphony with synthesizers, I got the soundtrack from the movie next. Then I fell in love with a Foo Fighter's tune and had to go out and buy that CD, with the original song on it, I think it's called *Walking away from you.* Brilliant tune. It's funny how these things *domino* there way into to your catalogue, and how your money keeps popping out of your wallet. Picked up Homespun this year too. I like it, but prefer the original. I am one of the 50% of the XTC clan who could take it or leave the demos I guess. At least I have a copy and the proceeds went to the band. I don't think there is any band either from today or yester-years that I would acquire a demo from other than XTC. If that says something, then I guess I must be ok. Whatever. Bummer about the May 2000 release of AP II, or WASP STAR, or *Our Shiney Hearts.* I was thinking after listening to Vol. I, that the new album ought to be out soon, until I read a few Chalk Digests this morning. It is very interesting watching a Chinese soap opera and not knowing what they are talking about it. It is also interesting to watch music videos from other cultures and in languages other than English. We complain about English bubblegum, synthesized music, but I have seen French and Chinese/Japanese bubblegum, synthesized music being sung by boy groups and hip gyrating twenty-somethings. Just thought I'd make an observation, Mark Newberg -- Do I have to tell the story of a thousand rainy days since we first met, It's a big enough umbrella but it's always me that ends up getting wet.

Paul McCartney's publishing company MPL Communications North America and his
London spokesman, Geoff Baker, are denying involvement in a McCartney
tribute album that Internet reports say is to be released on an undetermined
independent label. The reports say the album will have tracks by Brian
Wilson, Foo Fighters, Neil Finn, Matthew Sweet, Ben Folds Five, and others.
"We are not mandating or working on any current Paul McCartney tribute
record," says a source at MPL. Baker says he is not aware of the record,
adding, "and I don't think Paul is either."
Andy Partridge of XTC, who according to reports had covered "Uncle
Albert/Admiral Halsey" for the set with a guest vocal by John Cleese, denies
any involvement in the project. "This is really annoying," he tells
Billboard Online, "because I had about six requests to do this and I just
tore them up. We don't want to get involved in any tribute records."
Partridge added that XTC last week completed its new album, to be titled
"Wasp Star (Apple Venus Vol. 2)" and released in May on their own Idea label
via Cooking Vinyl in the U.K. He describes the set as "a lovely row."

Freud used to faint when in the presence of people he felt 'threatened him' and he had a life-long inability to visit Rome, he'd start having panic attacks at the thought of approaching said city. While many did think that Reich was a bit of a loon, he is sort of the precursor of the various 'body-oriented' psychotherapies such as Breathing, Rolphing and Primal Screaming among others. I guess his most salient contribution was to look at the whole body as opposed to just the brain as the source of 'psychic' conflict. You could say that while Freud gave us the Oedipal Conflict, thanks to Reich we can go around hitting chairs with styrofoam bats and scream at the top of our lungs. Because I look to the bottom line - somewhere, sometime, you find out that it's nothing more exalted than a con-trick. 99% of the time it's about exploiting people's naivete to get money out of them, or to exert some other form of control over them (Jonestown, Waco, Heaven's Gate, bla bla bla). Actually I think it was unfortunate that Reich was persecuted the way he was; he seemed harmless enough, especially when compared to some of his more energetic contemporaries - like well-known lifestyle consultant and hypnotist L. Ron Hubbard (Flame away, babies). Auras? Telepathy? Faith healing? Levitation? Shucks, who am I to judge? Hey, let's just throw 500 years of painstaking scientific endeavour out the window and go with any old load of cobblers that some delusional con-artist can dream up. It's just plain frustrating. Imagine how much the study of pre-Columbian cultures would have benefitted if all the money that Erich Von Daniken fleeced out of the public with "Chariots Of The Gods" had been put into archaelogical research? Now, I don't blame people for wanting to believe in mystical or magical ideas. The world is an ugly, dangerous, frightening, confronting place. Bad, horrible things happen at random, every day. Just the other day a woman in Sydney was stung to death by a swarm of bees, in the yard of her inner city home, and her 12-month-old baby barely escaped death after being stung over 200 times. People seek refuge from such things, understandably, and try to find a rationale (even though there isn't one) and some means of protecting themselves, illusory though it may be. I don't think that's wrong in itself. What I DO think is wrong is that there is always a hard-core of mongrels (though I don't necessarily count Reich as one of them) who seize on this and use it for their own gain. Yet, again and again, I find that any attempt to challenge this situation is typically characterised as a cruel, means-spirited, even fascistic attack on the very people that are being exploited. It's not about trying to *force* people to change their beliefs - it's about trying to get people to realise that what they believe has no basis in fact, and that they are being taken advantage of. First of all, I don't particularly believe that there is such a thing as "orgone energy" flowing around that can be collected in boxes. On the other hand, there is a certain degree of merit to Reich's ideas concerning repressed sexuality being the cause of some personal and social problems, particularly at the time he first introduced them. He certainly didn't deserve the ferocity of persecution that was dealt to him, which was more rooted in the morals of the time than any passion for the preservation of scientific truth. Duncan said something about orgone being the biggest crock since crystals and feng shui; fair enough, but you don't see books on these subjects being burned and their proponents thrown in jail. Perhaps in a moment of levity you might say "yeah, burn all that crap", but who really wants such an ugly scene to actually happen? The old goat was locked up in a particularly excessive and brutal fashion (which is usually what a lot of people have a problem with, more than any loyalty to his theories, though there are still adherents). Taking Burroughs' endorsement of orgone as a strike against it on account of his being a wife-killing junky seems besides the point; you don't read Burroughs to look for role models. Even his "non-fiction" is more often read for "look at the crazy shit this guy got into" than "what would be some good things to get into?" If you want to have the concert on disc, it's easy enough to download the files, convert them back to wav files and put them on a CD-R (though you'll probably need two discs: total time is over 81 minutes). I'm pretty sure I've got Andy Partridge's interview for the UK audio magazine SFX somewhere in the house. Is anyone interested? I can try to find it and give it the MP3 treatment as well... Enjoy the music. R. PS: maybe everyone already knows about this but I just noticed: Wolkswagen's newest TV ad campaing for their car 'Lupo' features Frivolous Tonight as its soundtrack. The ads have been running constantly on Italian TV in the past few days on all major TV networks. I hope this brings a lot of exposure (and royalties) to the band...

Way back when, before AV1 had appeared, there was talk that it was going to be called FIRE WORK. (Remember?) Well, I must say, that would have been a great name for the upcoming rough-n-tough AV2/Shiny Wasp Heart (or whatever). But what would I have liked to see as the title for the CD currently and lovingly referred to as AV1? PARROTS & LEMURS. Think of it. Lush, exotic, mysterious--perfect for the songs of AV1. But that's not all. It carries on the grand but not very well-documented XTC tradition of paired titles, of which there are quite a few. To wit: drums & wires oranges & lemons generals & majors paper & iron (notes & coins) ball & chain jason & the argonauts me & the wind pale & precious punch & judy chalkhills & children ALSO--and here's the kicker--it's culled from the VERY SONG that broke Andy's patience w/ Virgin and started the whole strike-thing in the first place: the last single, smothered in the cradle.... How's that for symbolism. But of course, I didn't actually tell anyone (except my friend Jason, who's out there lurking right now, even as I type--hiya Jason--who thought I should write Andy personally and tell him my idea or at least canvas Chalkhills, take to the barricades, and generally raise a ruckus), and now it's too late. But I assure you, unless AV2's new alternate title is really really cool (and I confess I think "wasp star" is at least kinda cool), the tapes I make for the car with be labelled "Parrots & Lemurs" and "Fire Work". Oh, and did I ever tell you about the time I bought "Song Stories"? Probably not. Anyway, the news about Dave dropping out had been official for some months, I think, when Song Stories was released. I rushed to the nearest barnes & noble (an uncharacteristically small one--not even a coffee shop) and, breaking my "I-will-never-buy-anything-from-a-predatory-chainstore-ever-again" rule, snatched up the only copy they--or any bookstore in a fifty mile radius--had. Now here's the weird thing. It was sort of defective. The cover of the book is coated with a thin plastic sheet, which peels off a bit along the edges as you read it. If you have a book like this then you know what I mean. But mine must have been at the end of a production run or something, because there is a strange translucent blue band running vertically down the front cover. The blue part is not adhesive, and you can get a finger under it. Also, it obscures Dave almost completely. If I were to peel off this plastic, all the images would come partly off, rendering them almost unrecognizable--except Dave. If I leave it (which I have), only Colin & Andy are visible. Ooooh spooky. It's like that old rumor that if you soak the cover of your Rubber Soul LP, Paul's face will come off. I knew someone who tried this--after 1980--and *John's* face came off instead....
