Glad to see there are fans of TMBG, the Pixies & Elvis
Costello here. God, I thought I was the only one.
Well, since some of you are familiar with those bands,
perhaps you know of the Residents as well. For those
who may not be, The Residents are often cited as "the
world's most famous anonymous band," as they have been
in existence for nearly 30 years, and still no one
knows their real identities. Well, I have a developing
theory on this that relates to XTC, so if anyone has
ideas about the accompanying points, please share.

Namely, the theory is that members of XTC are also
members of The Residents. There are several points
which lead me to this conclusion, so I will expound on
them here. Feel free to add, correct, change, etc.
This evidence may be entirely circumstantial, but this
has been bugging me for a while, and I'd like some
input from others familiar with the two bands ...

1. Some of the selections from XTC's Dukes Of
Stratosphear project sound EXACTLY like The Residents
tracks from that same period. Don't believe me? Listen
to the vocals & arrangements of "25 O'Clock" and "Mole
>From The Ministry", then listen to the Residents' 13th
Anniversary Show album, or one from around the same
time. Partridge does a distorted growl on "25" that
matches the Residents' "Where Is She" to a "T". And
the odd vocal effects on "Mole" could be lifted right
off of "Eskimo."

2. A pronouced dislike for organized religion is
highlighted by the music of both bands. The Residents
have their latest album, based on the Bible, and
titled "Wormwood." It points out many of the Bible's
stories that you would never hear about at Sunday
services, and takes great pride in focusing on the
hypocrisy of organized religion. Then there is, of
course, "Dear God," and the numerous lyrical
statements found in other XTC songs (Think "Your
Dictionary," "Merely A Man," the list goes on ...)

3. Similar-sounding singing voices. This point has
already been touched on a bit, but listen to The
Dukes, or some of XTC's more obscure material, then
listen to the Residents' Commercial album or Eskimo. I
can pick out Residents tracks that could be Colin as
well Andy. And the occasional Paul
McCartney-influenced voice is found in abundance on
both bands' releases. Of course we know that Andy
guested on the Commercial Album anyway (fifteen
seconds of vocals on "Margaret Freeman," but who's to
say this wasn't simply a tipping of the hat? - A clue,
as it were).

4. The Residents first-ever tour began immediately
following XTC's retirement from the road. This is
another interesting coincidence. The Residents had
been around for ten years by that point, yet suddenly
decided to tour for the first time. Maybe Andy felt
more secure to be performing anonymously? Hmmm ...

5. Both bands' willingness to create anonymous
projects. This point really sells the theory for me.
The Residents have been releasing material anonymously
for decades. During that same time, XTC and its
members have performed under such surnames as Terry &
the Lovemen, Dukes of Stratosphear, The Three Wise
Men, The Colonel, the list goes on ... What other band
in modern music has been so interested in doing this
type of thing? No one else I can think of.

6. Pronounced use of sexual imagery. The Residents and
Andy Partridge both seem to enjoy flaunting
conceptions of (particularly male) sexual imagery. The
Residents have devoted entire albums to the topic.
Andy's "Pink Thing" instantly comes to mind as a great
XTC example.

7. Routine usage of the terms "mole" and "arf" ... You
don't hear either of these words in modern rock music
very often, you have to admit. Yet both of these bands
have used them. I realize this sounds silly, but just
think about it in context with the other available
"evidence."

8. Partridge & the Residents each contributed projects
for John Flansburgh's Hello CD of the Month club. A
similarity of interests & styles could account for
this, but who knows?

Well, I could ramble on a lot longer about what is
probably a silly topic to begin with, but I won't. I
realize that the above could all be amazing
coincidences, or a case of one band influencing the
other, but please do give me your thoughts.

hola chalk-ones, long time no write.

with my exquisite sense of timing i decided to actually read the
latest issue and - lo and behold! - the second batch of fresh XTC is
ready to consume. i'll probably burn my fingers, but it'll be worth
it. since i've already gorged myself on raw demos, my appetite is
slightly less than the ravenous fiend i was becoming prior to
purchasing some AP bootlegs (*naughty* brookes - bad, evil, wicked,
naughty brookes!), but that was merely a rough and dirty fix at best.
"the man who murdered love" and "church of women" in particular make
my mouth water!

in the meantime, my flavor of the month is a band called - with
disarming simplicity - Self. 19 year old Matt Maharry dropped out of
Audio Engineering School at Middle Tennessee State University to play
all the instruments, mix and produce his first album, including
making up his own samples since he couldn't afford to buy rights to
the regular kind. since then he recruited some people including his
brother Mike M., to play backup.

why should you care? here are some bands he sounds like at different
times - if you like any one of them, you'll like Self:

The Mommyheads
Brendan Benson
Beck
Jellyfish (first album)
Ben Folds Five (ditto)*
Soul CoughingYY
Weezer
Spookey Ruben
(a little known band called ) You Were SpiralingY
the eels (_Beautiful Freak_)

this is not even a complete list. yet, unlike some bands i could
name (sorry Sugarplastic but it's true), he doesn't Xerox these bands
but run up to them and tap their shoulder, then turn around and book
the other way. and he's funny as hell, which is one of my favorite
things about any band. any guy who can write an Alanis parody that
actually works ("She's a Death Row contract/When you hate Dr. Dre" -
"Moronic") AND a song about _Titanic_ on the same album ("Hey Jack,
Hey Jack/I'm going to jump off the back/Of the Titanic/A big, big
boat") in a row is alright by me.

not only that, but the best of his music is not available by normal
means - always important for maintaining indie cred. however, thanks
to the wonder that is Napster, you can download MP3s of his best
songs and make your own cd's. the sparkling little gem that hooked
me? "Paint By Numbers", which i mistakenly downloaded as it was
labeled "Weezer - ex-girlfriend", which sounds nothing like Weezer
but which grew on me until i had to get more. it's also available on
one of his two commercial albums, _Breakfast With Girls_, or the
soundtrack to the straight-to-video teen flick _Dead Man on Campus_,
for all you squares who aren't with MP3s. listen to this song and
tell me i'm right. they're all good, although each one is different,
but "Paint By Numbers" is irresistable.

	blatheringly -

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes:

* - dear god, let's not start that debate again. i will however
state for the record that i don't think anything they've come out
with has been half as good as the first (self-titled) album. the
sheer pop deliciousness of "Philosophy" and "Best Imitation of
Myself" induced many eargasms. anyone who doesn't remember this,
search the digests for BFF and you'll be galvanized into taking sides.

YY - that SUCKS about SC breaking up. they were running
neck-and-neck with Cake in my esteem, but this sad news on top of the
severe ass-kicking they received from Cake's last brilliant release
_Prolonging the Magic_ causes them to slip irretrievably behind.

Y - you may remember them from He Is Definitely A Giant John
Flansgland's Hello Records, or then again, you may not. prog-rock by
college kids [Bard College in particular, which somehow makes it
almost okay - i saw them live and they looked like they had about 20
years between the three of them] about getting enough credits and
cutting class. yet there was something greatly enjoyable about their
music - i can't quite put my finger on it. they were kind of
inherently wacky, yet they tried to take themselves seriously. and
their name was positively retarded. for some reason this gives them
credit in my book.

On the subject of XTC sheet music, I seem to remember
reading an interview with Andy saying that there is
none - mainly because Andy uses a lot of alternative
tunings - open E and G seem to be special favourites
particularly on Mummer and Skylarking - so he's not
actually sure what chords he's playing though he did
add that he'd be willing to sit down with some muso
type and work them out if anyone could be bothered to
stump up the time, effort and cash (presumably there's
been no flood of offers?) Any geetarists out there
struggling with stuff like the Meeting Place,
Sacrificial Bonfire, Love On a Farmboy's Wages etc.
try tuning the open strings to an open E or G chord
then play an open E chord or fret all the strings on
the same fret (one finger across them all) or
alternatively play single note melody lines on the G
string whilst letting the other strings drone on open
(unfretted) and hey presto! - instant Mummer and
Skylarking sounds! (Try Beating of Hearts and Grass
melody on G string in open E tuning) Open C and E
chords also have that 'rusticky rural' tone to them.
Hope this is of some use to guitar noodlers. By the
way I also don't have a clue what these chords would
be transposed to 'normal' tunings - probably extremely
tricky 7 fingered augmented and suspended 'jazzy'
things. ta ta for now - Nick.

Digitalmaster asked, so I too must put in my two cents:

Having known nothing from the Kinks except You Really Got Me, Lola,
Come Dancing, and the other big singles, I heartily, heartily, OH SO
HEARTILY have five Kinks albums to recommend, which I've dived into
over the past three months with almost uninterrupted relish, every XTC
fan will enjoy getting Kinktified, methinks:

Will's Must Owns By The Kinks

1. Something Else
2. The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society
3. Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire
4. Part 1 Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround
5. Muswell Hillbillies

I'd start with Something Else, and it escalates from there. I'd say I
personally prefer Village Green Preservation Society (Not
"Preservation Acts 1 or 2" which are also two Kinks albums that
apparently aren't as good as these), Arthur and Lola versus
Powerman. All three are absolutely essential in my opinion. It's been
great -- as the Beatles and XTC are two of my very favorite bands, I
thought I'd heard all the major artists at that caliber -- but I'm
here to tell you, The Kinks got it goin' on, big time. Something Else
and Muswell are also excellent, just not quite up to the level of
Village Green, Arthur, and Lola in my opinion. I also own Face to
Face, which is often mentioned as one of the "Mighty 6" albums from
the Kinks (it preceeded Something Else"), but I gotta admit it doesn't
do as much for me as these five do.

Kevin Diamond, remember how we both discovered Blur about five or six
months ago? Behold the mightiness of the Kinks, they're in the game,
and in some ways helped invent it -- Ray Davies is one serious
talent. And Dave Davies is an incredibly underrated guitar player --
reminds me of DG. And Mick Avory on drums, serious rhythm
capabilities.

If you're not yet familiar with the Kinks, those five albums,
especially the middle three, will make the next two months of waiting
pure bliss. And there may be more, but I haven't ventured into any
others yet. If anyone has any other good kinks recommendations, let me
know, as the reviews and such get a little spotty after Muswell, and
their catalog is huge...

Best, Will

Good gravy, people have already got copies of Wasp Star? You lucky
bastards, I'm so green with envy that one of my coworkers just passed

What I intended to say was that "Wasp Star" is the Mayan term for the
PLANET Venus (I don't know why I wrote "goddess" ...I had just FINISHED
reading the text about Mayan stargazers).

In any event, we can really put the "other interpretations" subject to

Partridge). He was the one who told me the Mayan link and I surfed the web

Hello Chalkhills,

Long time no hear...from me.

Hope everyone is well.

I noticed the discussion on the availability of good music. A couple of
bands I need to recommend are Travis, who haven't won two(?) Brit awards for
nothing, and a local Boston band that I just adore, The Sheila Divine. If
you can get a hold of their album, I highly recommend them. They have a
great edge to their music and the lead singer can do some of the vocal
acrobatics that remind me of early Partridge, circa Drums and Wires.

I can't wait for the new XTC album to come out. I have been a very good
girl and have been patiently waiting to hear any new material when the new
album comes out. Apple Venus Vol. 1 was experienced by having heard all
songs previous through rough demos and now I am trying the route of being
patient. Had it been any longer waiting for the new album, I may have
broken down and begged for the newer demos but I *think* I can make it.

Take care chalkfolks,
Cheryl

I want to add a very large exclamation point to Michael Versaci's post
regarding his recent CSN&Y concert experience. I had seen CSN a few times
over the past dozen years or so, and while they were always rather pleasant
to see, my expectations for the CSNY tour stop here in Sacramento were not,
um, grandiose. Well, shee-it! What an experience, indeed...I have a newfound
(additional) appreciation for Neil Young, because he just *drove* the other
three to jaw-dropping, goose bump levels. It was one of those handful of
shows that you realize, in the midst of, you'll be remembering for life.

Moving on to XTC content: Regarding the Wasp Star song lineup, I was hoping
that Prince of Orange would magically pop up on this record. Damn! Guess
I'll keep waiting...

Also, for those who like the snippet of Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" on the
Volkswagen spot, his four-CD anthology box set has proven to be one of my
favorite purchases of the past year, full of sparse, moody and enchanting
acoustic folk/pop.
