Hello,
I just now read the posting my The Colonel and think that he has a
lot of valid points for everyone to consider, the whole concept is pretty
fascinating.
I'm not giving any sort of firm counter-argument here, but the
thought occurred to me that one detail in the Residents' behaviour might
argue against them including members of XTC. About 8 years ago The
Residents' gave a show in Madison, WI, and although I did not attend, I had
several friends who did. They participated in a "wine and cheese" type of
reception before the show, in the lobby of the Barrymore Theater where they
performed, in which they supposedly were mingling among the attendees out
of disguise. The whole point was that you could attend, mingle around
everyone, and see if you could sense who was a genuine member of the band.
I seem to recall that this was standard practice before all of their shows
on this particular tour. Despite our group-laments about XTC's obscurity,
I can't imagine that they could attend a function like this without being
recognized and blowing the whole project sky-high.
On the other hand, this wine-and-cheese thing could be a phony
put-on to counter arguments of who the real members are, just as I'm doing
here-----

Ben Folds Five - Unauthorized Biography of Rheinhold Messner - This is definitely their best piece of work. I tell you, I loves me those albums that are very coherent and use reoccuring sounds and themes more than a like an album that just sounds like a whole bunch of singles put together. This has a great flow and beautiful songs. 2. Frank Black and The Catholics - Anyone who has written this man off as not being up to his Pixie days has got a rock in his/her head. And it ain't the ROCK that this man puts out. This is balls to the wall- straight to two-track - no overdubs - you wish you could be as cool as us - ROCK. Black Francis is Dead - Long Live Frank Black. 3. AVI - (see last post) 4. The Pretenders - Kid -Isle of View - Creep SINGLE - I want to marry her and bear her children (although I am male and it's physically impossible and I am already married and she doesn't even know I exist and so on and so forth) If you have never heard her sing that wonderful radiohead song - I suggest you do. and Finally - 5. Lou Reed - Transformer - You know, EVERYONE has heard "Walk On The Wild Side" but how many have heard this whole album? I hadn't heard it until the last couple of weks after I had seen an excellent biography video on Lou Reed. This is really a beautiful and amazing album. "Such a Perfect Day" can, if caught at the right time, make this little boy weep. In all honesty, I had been going through a "not very interested at the moment with XTC" phase. THANK GOD it's over. Here are some new albums I got or will be getting I want to recommend to you guys and gals: 1. Camper Van Beethoven: Camper Van Beethoven is Dead, Long Live Camper Van Beethoven. (Great album, more of a collection of them either playing live or having some fun in the studio, but still, its nice to hear something new for these guys.) 2. Devo: Anthology: Pioneers Who Got Scalped. Come on, this is a classice. All the hits, most of the rare stuff, its a must! Psss (gotta wait till May though! :( 3. Robyn Hitchcock: A Star For Bram (I dont need to say what has already been said. This album is great. Also, anyone who is into tradding, I recorded a live show and have over 2 hours of RH live. 4. Frank Zappa: Son Of Cheap Thrills (So, they thought he was anti gay, anti semmetic, sexist, and foul, but really, he's one of the greatest thinking musicisians I have ever heard). 5. XTC (Do I really need to say anything?) 6. Lard: 70's Rock Must Die (I know this don't fit in well, but this is by far one of the best things to come from Jello Biafra of DK or AJ from Ministry) 7. Telletubbies: Dance with the Telletubbies (Ok, its a video and does not fit in. BUT, my daughter loves it, so I have no choice but to watch it every single day! 8. Untouchables: Ghetto Soul (You gotta remember "Free Yourself" This is one of the most inspiring groups of the 80's.) 9. Cracker: Garage D' Or (If you like Camper, you must like Cracker. Its much more than Lowery, because the instrumentals are just as good. I dont like when Hickman sings though!) 10. John Linnell: State Songs (Sounds like the old days of TMBG. Got this based on a recomendation and am very pleased with it)

I saw the Residents at the 9:30 Club a couple of years ago with our dear Chalkie friends Stephanie Takeshita and Bob Crain. The Rez were touring to support that Wormwood record The Colonel mentions. I'm sorry, I used to think the Residents were the absolute bee's knees, the Apotheosis of Cool, the _dernier cri_ of artistic incomprehensibility, guys so rarefiedly hip that even *they* didn't understand themselves. Meet the Residents, Eskimo, Commercial Album--all very heady stuff. This Wormwood show changed my mind. The music was turgid and dull, the presentation plodding, and the central premise--that the Bible contains (sensation!) examples of human and divine frailty, cowardice and avarice--spectacularly missed the point of the Bible while remaining simultaneously fundamentally juvenile. God ordered Abraham to sacrifice a son...so...Bang goes monotheism? And running through the whole presentation was the unmistakable odor of self-congratulatory sanctimony that one normally associates with the worst proponents of the Christian Right. I was quite underwhelmed and rather irritated. Normally I'm not at all kindly inclined toward the Judaeo-Christian worldview, but this show was a clear reminder of how awful and preachy and humorless and boring the Opposite Camp can be when it sets its mind to it. Compare that with the nearly contemporary Apple Venus Volume 1, where religious imagery from a hugely disparate set of sources--including the Christian--is used to inform a collection of songs that are optimistic, life-affirming, and full of love and veneration for the Earth and humanity. Do you really want to suggest they both came from the same minds? (And how did you come to the conclusion that "Your Dictionary" was about "the hypocrisy of organized religion"? It was 1984 & I was picking up tickets for a show at New York's "old" Ritz on 11th St. Can't remember if I was getting tickets for Fine Young Cannibals or Big Audio Dynamite or some other spin off of a band I liked previously, but I walked upstairs when I heard a band doing soundcheck. I watched for about 3 minutes before one of the roadies noticed me lurking & screamed for me to leave!!! I didn't even know who they were immediately, but the big eyeballs sitting on the stage gave them away. In short, none of them were Andy, Colin, Dave or Terry, I know that for sure. As far as Les Claypool, it could have been, but I didn't know who he was in 1984, so there was no way I'd recognize him. Too bad I didn't have a camera!!!

Oh, I'm WAY ahead of you, Will. I've been into the kinks for longer then
I've been into XTC. Great, Great stuff. Personally, though, I'd recomend you
pick up Preservation, Acts 1 and 2. I like infanitly more then Muswell
Hillbillies (I don't know why, but I can't stand that album) I own
everything from Face to Face to A Soap Opera, as well as a best-of of their
early years, and a collection of Kinkdom and Kinks-Sized called Kinks-Sized
Kinkdom. It's just one of those "two albums on one disc" deals. Great stuff.
You should pick up more of thier early stuff, too. I am in love with the
tone they got out of thier guitar on thier early stuff.
So, what's been playing in my CD player recently? Glad you asked...
Everything by XTC... not all the way through, mind you. I've been making a
CD-R for a internet friend I have who owns and loves Oranges and Lemons, AV
1, and The Big Express and, sadly, is at a loss for means to buy anything
else by them for a while. (she's broke.) So I made her a 74 minute
collection of some of my favorite tracks.
Trigger Goldberg - Vdeo Mankind: Interpratarions... this guy can't be found
in stores, he's stricktly an MP3.com artist, but his D.A.M (Dital Audio
Music) CD Video Mankind: Interpretations is incredible. I recomend you all
buy it.
The Folk Implossion - Dare To Be Surprised... the above mentioned artist,
Trigger Goldberg, recomended this to me, saying that it would "grow on you
like a fungus" Holy Crap, he was right. It's almost scary. This music seeps
into your brain, and won't let go. This guy has great taste, and has
recomended a bunch of other artists which I have ended up loving, like The
Apples In Stereo, and...
Cornershop - When I Was Born for the 7 time... this group is on David
Byrne's Luaka Bop records, and they're a funky combo of funk, indian music
(Sitar, etc.), and pop.
Elvis Costello - Armed Forces and This Years Model. I don't think I need to
say anything about these two. Just simply terrific.
Charlie Mingus - Mingus Ah Um ... great jazz stuff here. Brilliant.
I would also like to add my thanks to the people who enjoyed my last post,
about asking the girl out and listening to "Was a Yes." The date is tomorow
(saturday) night, and I could be happier. This girl is great... she's smart,
funny... sigh... I'm sorry I have to go and listen to "Then She Appeared"
Wow, that's a great song. You see, the thing I want to show here is that,
one of the reasons I love XTC's music so profusly is because it's so
truthful and honest, and it's so easy to relate it to your life. It's like
Andy and Colin are taking the lyrics right out of your mouth. Yet, they have
an ability to show you, also, something that, perhaps, you missed the first
time you looked at a situation. Bravo, Andy and Colin. I can't wait 'til you
blow me away with Wasp Star! I'm ready...

It's got some great hard rockers (like the title track) on it in addition to some catchy tunes (Better Things). I highly recommend this one. Lola vs. etc., etc... - I can never remember this full title. Anyhow, aside from Lola and Apeman, there are some other gems on there, like the Dave Davies penned tunes 'Strangers' and 'Rats.' State of Confusion - Released not too long after Give the People...,this is a pretty good disc (though, IMO, not as good as GTPWTW). It includes Come Dancing, Don't Forget To Dance, State of Confusion and Bernadette. As for what I'm listening to these days... Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream Radiohead - The Bends XTC - Apple Venus v. 1 Tom Petty - Echo Marillion - Afraid of Sunlight Finally, for those that don't know, Porcupine Tree will be releasing a new CD in mid-May.
