He worked extensively for Disney in the 30s and early 40s, on their most famous animated features "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "Bambi", "Fantasia" (particularly the Mushroom Dance) and "Dumbo", where he headed the team that created the brilliant Dance of the Pink Elephants, when Dumbo and Timothy the mouse get drunk. He moved to Warner Bros in the 40s and became the longtime collaborator of animation director Chuck Jones. Actually, Dying follows Dear God because the Man who Sailed Around his
Soul sailed around Dear God and now actually precedes it. Either that
or it was an Act of God.
What sticks in my mind is... the order on the CD version,
unremastered, and no amount of acting all shifty-tracked is going to
preserve the disorder that has resulted from all this.
As for royalties, just how completely did they cut themselves off from
Virgin? Do they still get residuals from their songs being played
(albeitly seldom) on the radio? Don't they still OWN the songs they
wrote?
I like remasters, but I don't understand why we have to follow the new
track ideals, especially if Virgin is behind all this. My unremastered
CDs will last either 100 years or 1000 umbrellas (I've gone through 10
or so since 1980...), so I'm sticking with those.

Earlier this summer, I discovered a lovely cache of XTC vinyl at a local
music store. Purchased a 12" Ball and Chain Single among others. Finding
the XTC vinyl was a bit of a challenge, as it was shoved underneath the
CD racks. Furthermore, the XTC vinyl was living in a cardboard box
which, in a previous life, had housed cheap whiskey. Contrast this
shabby treatment with a proud display of "Collector's Items" at the
front of the store consisting almost entirely of Strawberry Switchblade
LP's, EP's and singles! Talk about'cher screwed up priorities!
Additionally, the proprietor of said store spent much time attempting to
convince me *not* to buy the XTC vinyl but instead to buy the
re-masters, which he did not have in stock. Patiently, I explained to
him over and over that I *wanted* the vinyl. I don't think he ever quite
understood.

I like to think this aside was a small attempt at cosmically
counteracting the magazine's article about Sting teaching a yoga class
for 35 contest winners. The article itself is amusing. Sting is, shall
we say, overrated as a yogi?
Whaddya think the chances are of Colin or Dave teaching a yoga class? I
think a Partridge yoga class can be crossed right off the list of
possibilities. Unless, of course, it was a team-teaching endeavor? Can
you picture that class?! Ah, I've *got* to find better ways of spending
my time! Okay, yes, this is not *serious* speculation. We all *know* the
lads prefer Synchronized Water Aerobics over yoga any day!

I mean no offense to anyone, I'm guilty of missing deadlines as well, but there have been many musicians that have submitted their contributions much later than would have been acceptable but I had so much dropout that I wanted to build up the numbers, so I waited. The good news is that the wait was worth it. We have some truly excellent contributions. There are over 70 new covers of XTC material. There are several people involved in different stages of this project and one of those people is going through a divorce and another had a death in the family. So, the schedule ran into some delays. I was simply giving these people as much time as they needed to heal. The project is in mastering right now and I'm am finalizing credits, artwork and liner notes. I'm trying to explain, not whine. Please understand that the people involved with every step of this project are volunterring their time and effort. That means that family, work, house, school, car, pets, fun and music often come first. beyond a few of the early contributions, nothing has been done on time and that has given everyone else more time with which to procrastinate. I expect that the CDs will be available in late August but I have some travel plans that will prevent any shipments until early September. I will post an artist list, cost, instructions and mailing address in a few weeks. Cheers, Richard

Maybe it's the summer, the beach, the garden, hikes in the woods with the dog of my dreams - who knows! But for some reason I've been without good ideas for the past few months. Yikes! I don't want to lose touch with my chalk-bretheren, so here's some fluffy place-holding until I can get my brain jumpstarted!: I say Trey Anastasia and his band (complete with brass ensemble) play at Merriweather Post Pavilion (Maryland) last Saturday. The show brought out the usual Phish crowd, and the place looked like it had just been bombed, there was so much smoke rising from the crowd. While the show was not as exciting as a Phish show, it was rather amusing to see the hippy girls with faery wings sewn on their homemade dresses, twirling and trippy-dancing to a tuba solo. Tonight, 7/31/02, Phil Lesh will be playing. I'm sure it will be a good show, if only because tomorrow is Jerry Garcia's birthday. I'm considering going to the show because Les Claypool is supposed to be playing with them. It sounds like a crazy combination, and I'm interested in hearing what bass slapping does to Wharf Rat. Speaking of xtc, they are the best. Sure, I've been totally in Ween mode these past few weeks...okay, months. But I haven't forgotten on which side my bread is buttered. And of course it's real butter. Real butter on fabulously crusty, sour dough bread. Well, I've offered you words. Let's hope that next time they'll represent some good ideas! Take care! -Laura
