Fellow travellers,

Red Eye Records in Sydney has all the Japanese remasters for $34.98 each,
that's thePacific Peso, not US$. Just ask at the front counter as you won't
see them in the rack. It appears that every employee of the store has them
as well.

Hi there fellow chalkhillians!

I quite enjoyed John's post about Skylarking and what songs were planned to
go where and then how it actually ended up. There's just one thing that
threw me off...when he listed the order of the US album, he had the second
half listed like so:
Earn Enough For Us
Big Day
Another Satellite
Dear God
The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul
Dying
Sacrificial Bonfire

Every US copy of Skylarking I've ever owned (and I've gone through several
in the last ten years, as this record is one of my all time faves!), has the
second side in this order:
Earn Enough For Us
Big Day
Another Satellite
The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul
Dear God
Dying
Sacrificial Bonfire

Now, unless his list was the order in which Andy and Co. wanted it
sequenced, then I'm just being feather brained in not catching that. But I
understood that list to be the final running order, and so my state of
confuzzled-ness. Just where are these mutant US copies of Skylarking???
hmmmm?
In my world, Dear God has always tick tocked into Dying quite nicely...

Tossing a few shiny new pennies into the mix,
Angie

Pardon the off-topic post but I really wanted to commemorate the passing of
these three very notable figures from the entertainment world:

- DICK DENNEY (1921-2001), inventor of the Vox amplifier

- DELIA DERBYSHIRE, composer/arranger (1937-2001), doyen of the BBC
Radiophonic Workshop, who arranged and produced the electronic realisation
of Ron Grainer's "Dr Who" theme.

- MAURICE NOBLE, animation artist (1910-2001), whose work is known known by
millions - maybe even billions! He worked extensively for Disney in the 30s
and early 40s, on their most famous animated features "Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs", "Bambi", "Fantasia" (particularly the Mushroom Dance) and
"Dumbo", where he headed the team that created the brilliant Dance of the
Pink Elephants, when Dumbo and Timothy the mouse get drunk. He moved to
Warner Bros in the 40s and became the longtime collaborator of animation
director Chuck Jones. Noble was Warners' leading background designer/artist,
creating the fabulous backgrounds (and making major storyboard
contributions) for many of the most famous WB cartoons of the 40s and 50s.
His work includes the classic Bugs Bunny 'Fantasia' send-up "What's Opera,
Doc?", the legendary sci-fi spoofs "Duck Dodgers in the 24-1/2 Century" and
"Hare-Way to the Stars", and all of the Road Runner series, for which he
created the inimitable desert backgrounds.

Hi folks

Currently "enjoying" the london life- me and my
friends got attacked by a gang of kids in Clapham last
Friday as a result of the Brixton riots. All I was
doing was having a quiet pint and then a shower of
glasses came flying past me. It's more like Noo York
every day.

Have been reading all the stuff about Andys shed and
Colins studio and I got thinking- How secure are they?
From the articles Ive read there must be a fair
amount of kit in there which some dastardly fellow
wouldnt mind nicking! I hope/pray that theyve got
good insurance. I was also wondering if they are
going to rent out idea studios for other bands to use?
 (thinks...)

anyways back to the fortress. take care out there!

ps I got Jeffery Archers autograph when I was 7
(someone made me do it honest). Are there any
suitable counselling services available?

Hey since everyone is going to send John money for a new computer...

I want to move to San Francisco. As you may know, it's the most expensive
city to live in the U.S. So how about everyone sending me $1,000 or so (I
will NOT accept pledges of over $5,000! None! Zip! Zilch! Nada!)

When I get 60 pledges that will be enough for a downpayment on a condo in
the City and I will print my mailing address. You may send the money then.
Thanks,
Pete

What about "Brainiac's Daughter," for its reference to "a sleigh ride
underwater," and various watery sound effects? "Wounded Horse" mentions a
ship. "The Somnambulist" compares sleepwalking to deep-sea diving. I can't
really think of anything nautical about "No Language In Our Lungs," though,
so why is that on the list?

According to Song Stories, he didn't, and she was deeply hurt and upset
upon hearing the song and either figured out it was about her or was told by
either Andy or someone else after the fact. I could see why, if I were
involved with someone who was in a marriage which I knew was shaky, and I
were told "don't need another satellite," I'd be upset too.

Actually, Dying follows Dear God because the Man who Sailed Around his
Soul sailed around Dear God and now actually precedes it. Either that
or it was an Act of God.

What sticks in my mind is... the order on the CD version,
unremastered, and no amount of acting all shifty-tracked is going to
preserve the disorder that has resulted from all this.

As for royalties, just how completely did they cut themselves off from
Virgin? Do they still get residuals from their songs being played
(albeitly seldom) on the radio? Don't they still OWN the songs they
wrote?

I like remasters, but I don't understand why we have to follow the new
track ideals, especially if Virgin is behind all this. My unremastered
CDs will last either 100 years or 1000 umbrellas (I've gone through 10
or so since 1980...), so I'm sticking with those.

Until next time, this is still this time.

Ok Ok Ok,

I goofed.

The proper US re-release running order for Skylarking is ..

Summer's Cauldron
Grass
The Meeting Place
That's Really Super
Supergirl
Ballet for a Rainy Day
1000 Umbrellas
Season Cycle
Earn Enough for Us
Big Day
Another Satellite
The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul
Dear God
Dying
Sacrificial Bonfire.

BUT the order of the songs on the Geffen Interview LP is still......

Summer's Cauldron
Grass
The Meeting Place
That's Really Super
Supergirl
Ballet for a Rainy Day
1000 Umbrellas
Season Cycle
Earn Enough for Us
Big Day
Another Satellite
Dear God
The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul
Dying
Sacrificial Bonfire.

Howse about them Apples?

So apparently they changed it AFTER Todd gave the interview, they
pulled the same song but then changed the order? Why? Why not just put
D.G. after A.S.?

Harrison also wrote to tell me that the single version (B-Side I assume
but he might be reffering to the promo single) does not include the
fade-out segue into dying. This also explains why Dom's tape features
Dying as part of the D.G. outro.

GRRRR I am confused again! I'll figure this out yet though!

Earlier this summer, I discovered a lovely cache of XTC vinyl at a local
music store. Purchased a 12" Ball and Chain Single among others. Finding
the XTC vinyl was a bit of a challenge, as it was shoved underneath the
CD racks. Furthermore, the XTC vinyl was living in a cardboard box
which, in a previous life, had housed cheap whiskey. Contrast this
shabby treatment with a proud display of "Collector's Items" at the
front of the store consisting almost entirely of Strawberry Switchblade
LP's, EP's and singles! Talk about'cher screwed up priorities!
Additionally, the proprietor of said store spent much time attempting to
convince me *not* to buy the XTC vinyl but instead to buy the
re-masters, which he did not have in stock. Patiently, I explained to
him over and over that I *wanted* the vinyl. I don't think he ever quite
understood.

       -------

Andy Partridge mentioned in June's "Yoga Journal." Okay, only as an
aside in a review of Harold Budd's "The Room."

~~Bloom has "broadened his pop influence to include work with the Cocteau
Twins and Andy Partridge of XTC."~

I like to think this aside was a small attempt at cosmically
counteracting the magazine's article about Sting teaching a yoga class
for 35 contest winners. The article itself is amusing. Sting is, shall
we say, overrated as a yogi?

Whaddya think the chances are of Colin or Dave teaching a yoga class? I
think a Partridge yoga class can be crossed right off the list of
possibilities. Unless, of course, it was a team-teaching endeavor? Can
you picture that class?! Ah, I've *got* to find better ways of spending
my time! Okay, yes, this is not *serious* speculation. We all *know* the

Though a good gesture it wouldn't help. Just keep buying their "own"

Chalks,

I'm sorry for the lack of updates but this project brings a constant
reminder of the problems associated with project involving volunteers and...
ahem... musicians. I mean no offense to anyone, I'm guilty of missing
deadlines as well, but there have been many musicians that have submitted
their contributions much later than would have been acceptable but I had so
much dropout that I wanted to build up the numbers, so I waited.

The good news is that the wait was worth it. We have some truly excellent
contributions. There are over 70 new covers of XTC material.

There are several people involved in different stages of this project and
one of those people is going through a divorce and another had a death in
the family. So, the schedule ran into some delays. I was simply giving
these people as much time as they needed to heal.

The project is in mastering right now and I'm am finalizing credits, artwork
and liner notes.

I'm trying to explain, not whine. Please understand that the people
involved with every step of this project are volunterring their time and
effort. That means that family, work, house, school, car, pets, fun and
music often come first. beyond a few of the early contributions, nothing
has been done on time and that has given everyone else more time with which
to procrastinate.

I expect that the CDs will be available in late August but I have some
travel plans that will prevent any shipments until early September.

I will post an artist list, cost, instructions and mailing address in a few
weeks.

Cheers,
Richard

isn't hearing long-lost Andy-demos on first listen. (I've put a few tracks
online at prankpie.com/mike for the time being if anyone wants to hear
them).

For anyone in the L.A./Hollywood area, The Nines are apparantly playing at a
club called Sixteen-Fifty (formerly Vynyl) this Thursday August 2nd at
9:30pm, followed by esteemed Jellyfish-genius Jason Falkner at 10:50.

Hello to all!

Maybe it's the summer, the beach, the garden, hikes in the woods with
the dog of my dreams - who knows! But for some reason I've been
without good ideas for the past few months. Yikes! I don't want to
lose touch with my chalk-bretheren, so here's some fluffy
place-holding until I can get my brain jumpstarted!:

I say Trey Anastasia and his band (complete with brass ensemble) play
at Merriweather Post Pavilion (Maryland) last Saturday. The show
brought out the usual Phish crowd, and the place looked like it had
just been bombed, there was so much smoke rising from the crowd. While
the show was not as exciting as a Phish show, it was rather amusing to
see the hippy girls with faery wings sewn on their homemade dresses,
twirling and trippy-dancing to a tuba solo.

Tonight, 7/31/02, Phil Lesh will be playing. I'm sure it will be a
good show, if only because tomorrow is Jerry Garcia's birthday. I'm
considering going to the show because Les Claypool is supposed to be
playing with them. It sounds like a crazy combination, and I'm
interested in hearing what bass slapping does to Wharf Rat.

Speaking of xtc, they are the best. Sure, I've been totally in Ween
mode these past few weeks...okay, months. But I haven't forgotten on
which side my bread is buttered. And of course it's real butter. Real
butter on fabulously crusty, sour dough bread.

Well, I've offered you words. Let's hope that next time they'll
represent some good ideas!

Take care!

I turned 22 recently, and my girlfriend made me something fairly cool.
There's only one picture of it so far, and it doesn't show all the
carvings, but I think it's pretty cool. Check it out and tell me what you
think:
